Organization

The Department of Urban and Rural Development is situated at the main campus of SLU in Uppsala, and pursue education, research and external collaboration in Agrarian history, Environmental communication and integration, Landscape architecture and Rural development. The department also holds the Swedish Centre for Nature Interpretation SCNI, the research platform SLU Future Food and Sida's Helpdesk for Environment and Climate Changes. As partner in the EU-funded HERA project 'Cemeteries and Crematoria as public spaces of belonging in Europe: A study of migrant and minority cultural inclusion, exclusion and integration' (CeMI), led by Prof. Avril Maddrell (University of Reading), the department seeks to appoint a researcher at the interface of urban development, mobility studies, death studies, migration and minority studies (full time, 2 years, commencing June 2019). Job description

We are seeking a highly motivated researcher to join a multidisciplinary project investigating inclusion, exclusion and integration of cultural minorities in the funerary cultures of Northern Europe. The project focuses on eight smaller cities across six countries. The appointee will work on two case study towns in Sweden (Helsingborg, Umeå) in collaboration with the Swedish PI, and as well collaborate with the PI in Norway. The project will generate a policy report and visual exhibition, including photographs and models produced by participants, which will be exhibited in the case study towns.

The post will be located at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), working with Prof. Carola Wingren (Landscape Architecture, SLU Uppsala, Sweden), and as well to some extent collaboration with Senior Research Planner Tanu Priya Uteng (Sustainable Urban Development and Mobility, Institute of Transport Economics Oslo, Norway). The postdoc will be required to undertake some travel and overnight stays when conducting research, dissemination activities and conference presentations.



Qualifications

Candidates for the position should have:



• A PhD in a relevant field in the humanities or social sciences (e.g. landscape architecture, planning, theology/religious studies, cultural anthropology, cultural geography). Expertise in death studies and/or migration and minority studies is of great value
• Experience in qualitative data collection and analysis
• An ability to discuss sensitive issues relating to death and bereavement
• One or more IPRJ publicatons
• Excellent communication skills in English; fluency in speaking and reading Swedish (desirable also writing), and (ideally) knowledge of another language relevant to the project (e.g. important minority languages in case study towns; e.g. Arabic, Bosnian, Hindi, Mandarin, Somali, Yugoslavian languages)
• Skills at working in a multidisciplinary team
• Organizational competence/ Project management skills
• A talent for visual presentation and excellent communication skills
• Willingness to travel for field work, international team meetings and conferencies



Main duties and/or responsibilities

• Academic literature review
• Conducting in-depth stakeholder and biographical interviews at the case study towns (Helsingborg and Umeå in Sweden and as well collaborate to some extent with the Norwegian PI for Drammen and Skien)
• Qualitative data analysis
• Preparation of a policy-briefing report, to inform local authorities and other stakeholders
• Preparation and delivery of papers at key national and international conferences and project workshops
• Preparation of journal articles for submission to leading international journals
• Project management of public engagement and dissemination activities
• Compilation, final report and exhibition



Terms of employment

The appointee is planned to commence in post June/July 2019. The position is a full time position, on a temporary basis, for two years.
