Department of Animal Nutrition and Management
HUV conduct basic and applied research focused on feed, nutrition and management. The goal is to create a sustainable and profitable production with good animal care that provides high quality food. We conduct research on both production- and sports animals and pets. Our department is responsible for undergraduate education, research and postgraduate education in the subject areas of nutritional physiology, feed science, management issues and aquaculture. HUV offers an inspiring research environment where we study metabolic processes and nutrient utilization in animals, management in various animal production systems. HUV has activities on two SLU campus, Uppsala and Umeå.

Work description:
Ruminant animals, such as cattle and sheep, are unique, because of their special digestive system based on microbial fermentation. They can convert otherwise unusable plant materials into nutritious feeds. Most of the variation in nutrient supply for ruminants is related to forage quality and intake potential. Therefore accurate estimation of feeding value is very important in improving utilization of forages and other plant materials unusable for human food. In this project we want to investigate the potential to improve red clover as a protein source for ruminants. Red clover is an alternative to reduce the need for protein supplements in the diets for dairy cows. The research will include various analyzes related to protein feed evaluation in the laboratory as well as meta-analysis of collected data related to the utilization of red clover in feeding trials with dairy cows. In addition, the project includes participation in field work on the experimental farms of SLU in Umeå and of Lantmännen in Lännäs.

Qualifications:
Applicants must have a PhD in animal science (ruminant nutrition) or equivalent related discipline. The applicant should have experience in the methodology of protein feed evaluation applied in automated in vitro systems and related wet chemistry analytical methods. Experience of work related to forage field experiments and small scale ensiling are meriting. Additional experience of meta-analysis is advantages. The applicant should be able to work independently, should have good communication skills and proven skills in both oral and written scientific English.

Place of work:
Uppsala, but some laboratory and field work in the project will be conducted at SLU in Umeå.

Form of employment:
