hela Sverige Functional Bioinformatics within biomedical research is at the core of three strong research environments at Örebro University.
Regarding the current position, main cooperations are medical doctors and biomedical researchers within the international research environment Nutrition-Gut-Brain Interactions (NGBI:
http://www.oru.se/NGBI/ ). Diagnostic and predictive biosignatures are in the focus of recent research, filtered from clinical, molecular and microbial profile data, from studies in Irretable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Infectious Bowel Disease (IBD).
Functional Bioinformatics seeks to use, re-combine and further develop methods for data integration, statistical learning, network biology and statistical bioinformatics. Biosignatures for use in individualized therapy approaches as well as to infer specific disease mechanisms are at the core of our objectives. NGBI-research is tightly interwoven with food, nutrition and medical imaging companies in Sweden, and world-wide. Read more about the Bioinformatics research group and ongoing projects at

The starting date of the programme is in November 2015.
Background
Functional Bioinformatics is a strategically promoted research area at Örebro University. The current PhD position involves application and further development of a rich statistical bioinformatics methods repertoire within a stimulating cross-disciplinary environment: NGS sequence data analysis by developing python-based workflows, modeling known interactions of biomedical systems using semi-qualitative approaches, biosignature screening using advanced machine learning approaches, as well as using and developing network biological methods for integration with signature screening and modeling approaches. Functional conclusions from variable selection and modeling results are fed back to our biomedical partners, involving truly cross-disciplinary cooperation.
The successful candidate holds a Master of Science (or diploma) in Bioinformatics, Computer science, (Bio-)Statistics, (Bio-)Mathematics, Biophysics, or a related field. Excellent communication abilities in English language are a strong benefit. Experience in one or several of the following fields is considered necessary: Statistical programming, data analysis for high-throughput or NGS data, knowledge about systems biological modeling approaches or image analysis, database implementation/programming, and machine-learning approaches.
