Mechanisms of fungal biodeterioration and metal detoxification on treated wood
In order to meet future environmental requirements for sustainable wood protection, there is a need to understand how fungi interact and degrade wood treated with modern ways of protection or wood showing natural durability. Of particular interest is knowledge of the different types of fungi involved, their mechanisms of biodegradation and tolerance of metals commonly used for wood protection. In this Formas financed project you will work with the isolation and identification of fungi colonizing test samples from field tests of novel and modern protecting chemicals using molecular methods. Important decay fungi will be studied for expression of lignocellulose-degrading enzymes and analysis of their metal tolerant proteins. In particular a number of important Cu-tolerant wood degrading fungi will be examined in detail to understand their biochemical mechanisms of tolerance. Studies will involve application of biochemical (e.g. HPLC, electrophoresis) and advanced microscopy (SEM, TEM, X-ray) techniques of analysis. The Department of Forest Products has the possibility to conduct complete studies from the impregnation of wood samples through to laboratory and field tests to assess the effectiveness of novel and commercial wood treatments against microbes. In addition, the Department has advanced microscopy equipment for studying the interaction of fungi with wood components and wood protective chemicals at micro- and ultrastructural levels. The successful candidate will join a group actively involved in the research area. The application should include: 1) application letter with motivation and interest; 2) CV with summary of previous achievements and possible publications; and 3) Two reference persons.
Qualifications
Applicants should be highly motivated and interested in molecular biology and have a Masters degree (or equivalent) with emphasis on biology, molecular biology, microbiology or wood science or similar subjects. Knowledge in plant biology, molecular biology, cell biology and wood science is a merit. Skills in molecular biology, protein separation, electrophoresis/western blots, HPLC and microscopy are of particular merit. The applicant should have good communication skills and good skills in both oral and written English.
