OSO has a long and distinguished history in space geodesy and geosciences research and is an active contributor to the Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS). This position, that is a support role, focuses on the operation and continued development of the observatory's space geodetic instruments, supporting and advancing research in this field. We are seeking a motivated and skilled colleague who wants to be part of further strengthening OSO's world-leading geodetic activities and shaping the next steps in their development.
About us
The position is embedded in the Space Geodesy and Geodynamics (SGG) unit at OSO. The academic work within the unit concentrates on studying global geodynamic phenomena to achieve a better understanding of the complex system Earth. In particular the unit makes use of and develops measurement techniques relevant to tracing deformations of the Earth's crust due to mass redistribution, inter- and intra-plate tectonics, loading effects, variations in the orientation and rotation of the Earth, sea level monitoring, and the spatial and temporal variation of atmospheric water vapour.
The SGG unit is responsible for operating the geodetic and geophysical instrumentation at OSO, including the gravimeter laboratory, the tide gauges, the local network for Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) observations, and geodetic Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI).
Job description
We are looking for a Research Specialist to join the Onsala Space Observatory (OSO) and provide advanced technical and methodological support to geoscientific research. In this role, you will contribute to the development, operation, and continuous improvement of high-precision measurement systems that enable and strengthen world-leading research.
Working closely with scientists and technical staff, you will ensure that the observatory's instruments deliver reliable, high-quality data and that observation techniques continue to evolve. Your work will be central in supporting geoscientific investigations by maintaining and advancing systems such as GNSS-based and traditional tide gauges, GNSS-reflectometry, and ground-based microwave radiometers.
As a Research Specialist, you will:
• Operate, monitor, and develop both GNSS-based and traditional tide gauges at OSO, with a special focus on GNSS-reflectometry.
• Perform operational GNSS data analysis for OSO's GNSS cluster and wider Nordic networks, using scientific analysis software to support and strengthen research activities.
• Oversee the operation, maintenance, and development of ground-based microwave radiometers, including data quality monitoring and analysis.
• Collaborate with observatory technical staff to ensure the reliable operation of hardware and software systems.
• Drive continuous improvements in measurement techniques to reduce observational errors and enhance data precision.
• Depending on your qualifications a fraction of work time can be allocated to contributing to the geoscience related research at OSO
Who we are looking for
We are seeking candidates with:
• A Doctoral degree in geodesy or an equivalent education. Experience of GNSS-reflectometry, tide gauges, scientific GNSS data analysis, and ground-based microwave radiometry.
• A proven ability to closely work with development engineers and technical support staff in support of maintaining operational geodetic systems is a strong advantage for the position.
• The candidate has to have the possibility of own transportation to/from the work place at the Onsala Space Observatory, about 45 km south of Gothenburg.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills in English
• It is also meritorious to have a record of working for equality and diversity within the workplace.
For a full description of the qualification requirements for a Research Specialist position at Chalmers, please consult our Appointment regulations, Chapter 8.2.
Chalmers offers Swedish language courses for those interested, though Swedish is not required for the position.
