Join us as a Research Specialist at the Division of Systems Biology, Chalmers University of Technology. This position is dedicated to supporting research activities that advance our fight against antibiotic resistance.

Antibiotic resistance is one of the most severe threats to human health globally. The Bengtsson-Palme lab is using data driven approaches to find solutions and interventions to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance. We are looking for a Research Specialist who has a combination of strong laboratory and bioinformatic skills and can support the group's work on evolution of resistance in microbial communities.

About the role
This position will be based at the Department of Life Scienes and the Division of Systems Biology (SysBio), where we conduct research, innovation, and education to enable a biobased society and improve human health.
Within this context, we are addressing one of today's most pressing healthcare challenges: antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Unless effectively controlled, AMR is expected to cause millions of deaths annually in the coming decades, making research and innovation in this area of utmost importance.

As a Research Specialist, you will contribute to this effort by supporting method development and project activities in the lab. Your work will primarily involve bioinformatic analysis and method development, but may also include wet lab tasks such as DNA extraction and sequencing, as well as occasional field sampling. The role further includes coordination with external project partners.

In this collaborative environment, you will work closely with lab members who bring expertise in microbiology, bioinformatics, and large-scale data analysis. Our division has established strong partnerships both in Gothenburg and across Sweden, as well as internationally. You will become part of a dynamic and interdisciplinary research setting at Chalmers SysBio.

Major responsibilities
As a Research Specialist, you will suppport research activities through:

• Laboratory setup, method development and data analysis of systems for artificial selection for antibiotic resistance
• Development of methods and tools for analysis of antibiotic resistance in microbial communities and bacterial genomes
• Evaluation of new and existing method and solutions for large-scale genomic data analysis
• Conduct DNA/RNA extractions and environmental field sampling
• Coordinate activities, meetings, workshops, and collaborations

Your profile
The following requirements are mandatory:

• Doctoral degree in microbiology, molecular biology or similar.
• Five years or more of postdoctoral work experience with both microbiology and bioinformatics
• Strong knowledge of antibiotic resistance and resistance evolution
• Experience with bioinformatics to analyze genomes and metagenomes for antibiotic resistance, mobile genetic elements and taxonomy
• Experience with selection systems for antibiotic resistance
• Practical experience with development of methods and tools for analysis of antibiotic resistance in microbial communities and bacterial genomes
• Experience of comparing new and existing method and solutions for large-scale genomic data analysis

Meritorious qualifications:

• Experience with organizing meetings, workshops and social events
• Experience with working in large consortia with international researchers
• Supervision experience of master and doctoral students
• Wet lab experience with e.g. DNA extractions
• Strong organisational skills

Contract terms
Full-time permanent employment.
