AstraZeneca is now looking to recruit a Research Scientist to join the vitro team within the heart failure bioscience department. Placement for the position is in Gothenburg, Sweden within the CVMD IMED.

AstraZeneca has a patient-centric approach for discovering novel treatments for patients with metabolic disesase, chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease. The three areas are integrated into one unit - the cardiovascular and metabolic disease innovative medicines unit (CVMD IMED). At the heart failure Bioscience department we focus on identifying and validating new drug targets for patients with cardiovascular disease and heart failure. The team delivers key data to projects across all phases of the drug discovery and development and we work with different modalities such as small molecules, mRNA, antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) and peptides.
The Role
The Reserach Scientist will get the opportunity to join the Heart Failure in vitro team where you will play a key role in driving science and projects forward. This role is primarily lab-based and you will explore novel drug targets and support existing projects with key in vitro and ex vivo data. You will also develop new in vitro assays and models for heart failure to support the projects and the heart failure strategy. Collaboration is critical for successful delivery of drug projects and you will work closely with scientists/teams from a wide range of different functions within AstraZeneca. You will work with in vitro biology using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) and primary cardiovascular cells along with molecular biology techniques and high content imaging and will have the opportunity to try novel techniques and ideas required for progressing existing portfolio and novel science.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
* Independently design, develop and execute in vitro and ex vivo assays for projects from pre-target identification to clinical stage
* Independently analyse and interpret generated data
* Maintain understanding of the science in heart failure and cardiovascular area
* Communicate data to the project teams and department
* Work collaboratively within Bioscience and other functions throughout AstraZeneca to deliver on key project activities
* Contribute to communications of scientific findings through publications in scientific journals and meetings
* Contribute proactively to a vibrant and innovative working environment where improvements and new ideas are adopted and freely shared
* Ensures own work, and the work of others, is performed in accordance with appropriate Safety, Health & Environment (SHE), quality and compliance standards, e.g. Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)
Essential Requirements
* Bachelor's or master's degree in cardiovascular disease
* Strong experience in cell and molecular biology, biochemistry and relevant in vitro/ex vivo assays within the cardiovascular area
* Knowledge and experience in handling and manipulating relevant cardiac cell types, including iPS cells and primary cardiac cells
* Knowledge and experience in cell based assays
* Knowledge and experience in standard cell and molecular biology techniques, such as real-time PCR, Western blotting, ICC, ELISA
* Background in drug discovery and development in the pharmaceutical industry
* Entrepreneurial and flexible ways of working
* Good collaboration skills
* Strong oral and written communication skills
