This position reports to R&D Team Lead.
Your role and responsibilities
You will be part of the Robotics team at ABB Research in Västerås Sweden. In our role as ABB Research, we ensure ABB's technology competitiveness now and in future. In the Robotics team we focus on mechatronics concepts, design and robot intelligence in both industrial and service robot segments. Our research activities usually formulated as technology pre-study and technology development projects.
We work closely with ABB's robotics business to ensure our research will bring unique value for ABB business. At the same time, we have close collaboration with academic world to bridge the academic and industrial research. In this team, one of our historical highlights is the creation and development of the dual-arm YuMi robot concept and the mobile YuMi concept.
As part of our team, your focus will be in two aspects. Your primary focus will be developing new robot and mechanical system concepts and prototypes. This includes design, calculation, simulation and analysis, testing, and the verification and validation of concepts. You secondary focus will be working as an expert user of our robot design and calculation toolchain, and further develop such tool chain.
Starting with scouting the latest technology based on stakeholder requirements, you will generate new robot and mechanical system concepts. These concepts will then be developed into technology demonstrators or prototypes using ABB's design tools. Following this, you will handle procurement, component and system testing, and necessary verification and validation both internally and externally. Finally, you will document the results in various technical reports.
Your role will involve independently exploring the entire development chain while closely collaborating with colleagues within the research organization, stakeholders, and result receivers on ABB's business side. You will also work closely with suppliers and selected customers for pilot projects
Qualifications for the role
Master's or Ph.D. in robotics and/or mechanical engineering.
10+ years mechanical system design and calculation experience with 5+ years robot system development experience.
Experienced with different types of robot design, drive-train dimensioning, load calculation, structural analysis and simulation will be merit.
Familar with ABB robot products, including major structures and components, as well as key design process and tool chains will be an advantage.
Experience for both product and technology development will be a plus.
Enjoy driving specific activities to successful conclusion while following a visionary continuity of the work.
To succeed in this position, you should be capable of working both independently and in a team.
Have good communication skills in the English language. Speaking Swedish will be a merit.
