Respiratory is one of AstraZeneca's main therapy areas. Our aim is to transform asthma and COPD treatment through inhaled combinations at the core of care, biologics for the unmet needs of specific patient populations, and scientific advancements in disease modification.

From a research perspective we work to understand, treat, modify and ultimately cure respiratory disease with an emphasis on four diseases with significant unmet medical need; asthma, COPD, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) and Chronic Cough. Recently, we reshaped our strategic focus into three mechanistic and complimentary areas in chronic lung disease: Lung Immunity, Lung Epithelium and Lung Regeneration.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The remit of the RIA Lung Regeneration Department is to generate in vitro, in vivo and ex vivo Biology data to further our understanding of the potential in lung regeneration in chronic lung disease and support the biology ranging from the target idea stage up until Phase 3 investment decision.

We have several job openings for Research Scientists in our new Lung Regeneration Department where we are looking for lab-based bioscientists who with appropriate support designs, develops and conducts experiments to contribute to the identification of new targets, biomarkers, the progression of drug discovery projects or publishable scientific insights.



Accountabilities and responsibilities:

* To execute experimental procedures according to study plans agreed with the team leader or other supervisor.
* To contribute to the interpretation of experimental data and play a significant role in the planning of further experiments
* To identify and solve problems associated with their experiments and discuss with other team members
* To be an effective team member in supporting projects to meet their objectives
* To possess a range of practical skills and demonstrate flexibility within and across teams
* To effectively communicate results to other members of the project, team, section or to other Departments as required
* To maintain an awareness of current developments in the literature, including advances in scientific methods relevant to their activities
* Agreeing and adhering to personal goals and objectives
* Ensure that the work is performed with the right quality in accordance with compliance processes meeting Biology standards
* Will have a good working knowledge of all relevant company policies - ensure GLS compliance, compliance with corporate code of conduct and adherence to best SHE practice for self and others - and national regulations, and ensure that industry standards are applied to working for self and others within the discipline team.
* Will have a broad understanding of own function, and will have a clear understanding of overall AZ R&D objectives. Will be regarded as a source of scientific knowledge inside the department.
* Contributes to a science-driven and entrepreneurial organization hungry for new ideas, innovative ways of working and continuous learning
* Positive can-do attitude, with respect for the individuals with different skillset and knowledge, eager to learn in each interaction.

Essential Requirements

* B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in relevant subject area
* Experience in the use of in vitro, ex vivo research methods relevant to the study of lung damage and lung repair is beneficial, including fibrobalst, epithelial cells and lung stem cell biology
* Understanding and experience in flow cytometric analysis and sorting is desirable
* Experience with precision cut lung slices of human and rodent is desirable
* Experience in IHC, RNA Scope and image analysis
* Excellent scientific laboratory skills and ability to work independently
* An understanding of respiratory diseases including COPD and/or IPF
* Excellent interpersonal skills
* A good understanding of the drug development process, from lead identification through clinical development
* Ability to work productively in a matrix team environment and excellent collaborative skills
* Excellent written and oral communicational skills
* Good networking and communication skills and a strong delivery focus
