The Department of Computer and Information Science was founded in 1983 but its roots go back to the early 1970s. It is one of the largest computer science departments in northern Europe.

Our research covers a broad spectrum of fields, from core to applied computer sciences. Its vast scope also benefits our undergraduate and graduate programmes, and we now teach courses in several engineering programmes at bachelor's and master's levels, as well as the programmes in statistics, cognitive science and innovative programming.

LINKÖPING UNIVERSITY
hereby advertises a tenure track position as

Research fellow/Assistant professor in AI and Machine Learning

based at the Department of Computer and Information Science (IDA).

Description of the subject area

The Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) is Sweden's largest individual research program ever; a major national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, education and faculty recruitment (see https://wasp-sweden.org). WASP comprises five Swedish full partner universities and a substantial part of Swedish industry and commerce. The present position is part of the WASP recruitment program, which aims to strengthen Sweden's position in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning. The successful candidate will be affiliated with a new research group led by Guest WASP Professor Hector Geffner and will also interact with the extensive existing research activities in AI, machine learning and deep learning within the Department of Computer and Information Science and the Department of Electrical Engineering.

The present position targets the subject area of AI and Machine Learning, in particular in the fields of planning, knowledge representation, and machine learning, with the aim of developing formulations, algorithms, and tools for supporting representation learning for planning. AI research is largely divided between the study and development of model-free learning methods, that do not produce symbolic representations, and model-based methods, which rely heavily on symbolic representations, often first-order symbolic representations featuring objects and relations. An important goal of the research is to bridge this gap by developing methods for learning symbolic representations from data, in particular, for computing plans and generalized plans, not tied to particular sets of objects or state spaces.
