Onsala Space Observatory (OSO) in Sweden is recruiting for a permanent position as Support Engineer/Scientist for geodetic VLBI. We are seeking an enthusiastic and engaged individual to join us on our exciting journey taking the next steps developing our world leading geodetic VLBI activities. OSO has a long history in geodetic VLBI and is a pioneer of the VLBI Global Observing System (VGOS); the next generation geodetic VLBI system that addresses society's need for an improved Global Geodetic Reference Frame (GGRF). OSO operates the Onsala twin telescopes (OTT),which is currently the only operational twin VGOS telescope in the world.

Information about the division/the project
This support position is embedded in the Space Geodesy and Geodynamics (SGG) unit at OSO. The academic work within the unit concentrates on studying global geodynamic phenomena to achieve a better understanding of the complex system Earth. In particular the unit makes use of and develops measurement techniques relevant to tracing deformations of the Earth's crust due to mass redistribution, inter- and intra-plate tectonics, loading effects, variations in the orientation and rotation of the Earth, and the spatial and temporal variation of atmospheric water vapour. The SGG unit is responsible for operating the geodetic and geophysical instrumentation at OSO, including the gravimeter laboratory, the tide gauges, the local network for Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) observations, and geodetic VLBI.

Job description
The prime responsibility of the position is to coordinate and carry out geodetic VLBI observations with international partners, as well as carry out local interferometric observations with the OSO telescope cluster. Working with observatory technical staff the person appointed will ensure the operation and maintenance of the systems needed for geodetic VLBI, both hardware and software. For candidates with research experience continuously developing the VLBI technique and reducing observing error contributions to achieve ultimate geodetic precision is a long term goal. For such applicants with a PhD up to 30 % of work time for the appointees own directed research can be included in the work description.

Contract terms
Permanent employment

Qualifications
A masters degree in geodesy, physics, electrical, computer engineering or an equivalent education is required. Past experience with the VLBI technique, including one or more of hardware, software, observations, or data analysis is also a requirement. A PhD degree and merits in research in a relevant subject is an advantage. It is also meritorious to have a record of working for equality and diversity within the workplace. For PhD level candidates up to 30 % own research can be included in the work description.

A proven ability to closely work with development engineers and technical support staff in support of maintaining operational VLBI systems is a strong advantage for the position. The candidate has to have the possibility of own transportation to/from the work place at the Onsala Space Observatory, about 45 km south of Gothenburg.
