Research engineer/post doc in Plant Bioinformatics
SLU is an international university, world class in life and environmental sciences. We are ranked among the Top 100 of ca 5,000 European universities. We have a strong research focus, but we also offer some of Sweden's most in-demand educations; veterinarian, forester, and landscape architect.
www.slu.seWe are looking for a bioinformatician who will handle research projects linked to scientific groups associated to Plant Link, the newly formed plant research network at SLU and Lund University. Plant Link wants to bridge the gap between basic and applied plant research with the objective to improve crops and food products, and to enable production of materials, medication and energy from plants in a sustainable way.
Duties: The successful candidate will be placed at SLU Alnarp and interact with researchers both at SLU Alnarp and Lund University as well as with other bioinformaticians at Lund University. The person will work in close collaboration with experimentalists. The position is part of the national research infrastructure for bioinformatics BILS (Bioinformatics Infrastructure for Life Sciences), which is to expand to over 20 bioinformaticians in 2012. One overall aim is by reiterative experimental verification of gene networks and pathway models for the development of robust models with high predictive value. Plants produce many thousands of compounds and an important task is to try to link sequence information as well as gene and protein expression and modifications to plant production and signaling.
Qualifications: The candidate should have a background in molecular biology, genetics or computational biology and be familiar with tools for functional annotation and data integration, and preferably also analysis of gene expression, next-generation sequencing, proteomics and metabolite data. Knowledge of handling of large scale data, scripting languages (e.g. Perl, Python, R) and statistical methods is necessary. Documented experience of database handling is favorable. For the candidate to be considered for a post doctorial position a PhD degree related to the abovementioned research areas is a pre-requisite. For the employment as a research engineer a master degree or equivalent in related subjects is desirable. The applicant must have excellent communication skills.
Form of employment: This is a one-year position extendable to two years for qualified candidates.
Extent: 100 %
Starting date: By agreement
SLU is an equal opportunity employer.
University salaries are set on an individual basis.
