Welcome to Linnaeus University! A place for knowledge, ideas and development. For growth potential and a belief in the future. In Småland and in the world. The Department of Chemistry and Biomedical sciences is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities within this multidisciplinary school include the areas of Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences and Organic Chemistry.

The research area and duties
The research is part of long-term efforts to study high power-output and resistance to stretch of striated muscle in health and disease (e.g. hereditary cardiomyopathies). Key duties of the research engineer will entail development of 1. total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy based single molecule ATP turnover assay, 2. force measurement assays for small ensembles of isolated myosin motors interacting with actin filaments and 3. engineering, expression and purification, in mammalian cell systems, of human striated muscle myosin II. Efforts will be made to develop the system both for scientific studies of highest quality and for reduction, refinement and replacement of laboratory animals. After the initial development phase (approximately one year), the research engineer is expected to use the assay system for a range of studies of both normal muscle function and disease conditions. Key experimental techniques, in addition to those mentioned, will be general biochemical and biophysical methods, particularly fluorescence microscopy and in vitro motility assays. The position may also include teaching and instructional responsibilities.

Qualification requirements
Applicants should have a PhD degree in a subject area of relevance for the research group (biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, biomedical engineering etc.) and relevant postdoctoral experience.

Specific requirements are:

• Relevant postdoctoral experience with studies of molecular motors and/or muscle in focus.
• Previous documented experience from experimental work with 1. in vitro motility assays, 2. mammalian protein engineering and large scale expression systems, 3. development of optoelectronic devices based on total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy methods and 4. proficiency in Matlab programming.
• Demonstrated high proficiency in written and spoken English

Other assessment grounds
Documented interest into issues related to the 3R of laboratory animal sciences is viewed favourably. The applicant is expected to be able to solve problems independently and, also in other ways, have the ability to work independently as well as interact well in a research group.

Research area: Biomedical sciences
Location, until further notice: The Department of Chemistry and Biomedical Sciences in Kalmar
Terms of employment: Full-time, permanent employment, starting as soon as possible after final application date.
