Welcome to Linnaeus University! A place for knowledge, ideas and development. For growth potential and a belief in the future. In Småland and in the world.

Linnaeus University is a modern, international university in southern Sweden. The university is situated in Kalmar and Växjö with 34,000 students and 2,000 employees. For more information see: Lnu.se or Lnu.se/en.

The Department of Biology and Environmental Science is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities within this multidisciplinary department include the areas of aquatic ecology, cell and organism biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, environmental science and environmental engineering as well as disease ecology.

Job tasks:
The marine microbiology research group in Kalmar seeks a research engineer for studies of the ecology of marine microorganisms.
Marine bacteria play a central role in driving global biogeochemical cycles of elements essential to life (e.g. carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous), but detailed knowledge of how bacteria carry out specific steps in element cycling is lacking. This project will investigate the molecular mechanisms for carbon cycling employed by marine bacteria in an experimental context of natural mixed microbial communities (e.g. mesocosm experiments). Work includes carrying out laboratory experiments with natural bacterial assemblages in seawater. Analysis approaches include state-of-the-art experimental methods in marine microbial ecology, along with bioinformatics analyses of gene expression profiling of bacterioplankton in relation to environmental conditions.

Qualifications
Requirements:

• Applicants should have a minimum of an advanced level undergraduate degree (240hp/240ECTS) degree in biology, ecology or microbial ecology.
• Documented expertise in performing mesocosm or microcosm experiments with natural mixed bacterial assemblages, and experience in carrying out analyses of microbial abundance, and bacterial production and respiration along with sampling for dissolved organic matter.
• Experience with working with marine bacterial isolates and culturing axenic phytoplankton.
• Expertise in using bioinformatics pipelines for statistical analyses of gene expression of marine bacteria.

Meriting:

• High proficiency in written and spoken English.
• Ability to work independently to solve problems.
• Capacity to interact well in a research group (i.e. team work).

We attach great importance to personal suitability.

Terms of employment
Employment and scope: Short-term employment. Full time (100%) for 4 months, with a possibility for extension.
