Research Engineer in High Resolution NMR
Faculty of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences is the largest of the four faculties of SLU. Our area of activity covers a wide range of disciplines, spanning over agriculture, food and biotechnology to natural resources, environment of landscape planning. Most of our departments are located in Uppsala, 65 km north of Stockholm.
A two-year research engineer position in NMR is available at the Department of Chemistry, Uppsala BioCenter, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Uppsala. The NMR research at the department of Chemistry encompasses metabonomic studies as well as structural analysis of biomolecules and of their interactions and involves many national and international collaborations.
The department of Chemistry is situated at the Uppsala BioCenter at SLU which regroup scientists and students from six departments from the Faculty of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences: the departments of Chemistry, Food Science, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Forest Mycology and Pathology and Plant Science and Forest Genetics.
Duties: Take care of the maintenance and troubleshooting of the NMR spectrometers, including cryogen and magnet maintenance. Setup routine and state-of-the-art NMR experiments. Train, assist and supervise users in operation of routine and state-of-the-art multi-dimensional biomolecular NMR experiments. Provide hands-on NMR sample preparation, NMR data acquisition, processing and spectral interpretation. Maintain and develop experimental protocols, especially in the field of metabonomics. Closely collaborate with scientists within own department as well as with external scientists. Communicate results and protocols at project meetings.
Qualifications: Experience in implementing and applying state-of-the-art experiments for high resolution biological NMR applications and metabonomics. Experience in practical application of NMR to solve biological problems. Experience in preparation of biomolecular samples for NMR data collection - Excellent knowledge of NMR instrumentation and ability to perform routine trouble shooting as well as routine maintenance. Excellent communication and integration skills. Ability to work independently, as part of a team and with a number of different investigators from multidisciplinary teams. Good English skills and ability to write scientific manuscripts. Basic knowledge of chemometrics is an advantage. A Ph.D. in NMR spectroscopy, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics or Structural Biology is an advantage. Good knowledge in Swedish (speeking and writing) is an advantage.
