Description:
The project is "early detection of European spruce bark beetle attacks using hyperspectral drone images". The spruce bark beetle is the insect causing the most damage to the spruce forests in Sweden. In-time sanitation cutting is one of the key measures, and knowing the best way and time to detect infestations is essential to making a concrete plan for detecting and cutting. This project will collect drone-based hyperspectral imagery, conduct fundamental research on the spectral response, and propose a methodology for accurate early detection.

The division of Forest Remote Sensing in SLU performs research on developing remote sensing of forest damages at various scales. We are developing a group with increasing number of experts on this topic.

We are looking for a research engineer to collect drone images and field data in Remningstorp, Lerdala, in 2023. The work includes the collection of image data with drones as well as post-processing of the images. The work also includes collecting inventory data on forests. Work will take place in Remningstorp, with close collaboration and communication with researchers in Umeå. The project will support a PhD position and potentially support a Postdoc position for the data analysis after the data collection.

Qualifications:
We are looking for a person with a Bachelor degree in Electronics Engineering, or a Master degree in Engineering, Forestry, Agricultural, or similar. Fluent in English and driving license are required. Meritorious are experienced in drone flight, multispectral sensors, image processing, programming, statistical modeling, GIS, good ability to learn new sensors and software. We attach great importance to personal qualities, such as independence, problem-solving and teamwork. We also welcome applicants with research interest in the topic who are interested in a PHD-student position after the data collection.
