Field of subject for the appointment: Ecology with specialization in Marine Microbial Ecology
Scope of appointment: Full time, planned starting date is April 2019. The appointment is permanent.
Placement city: Kalmar
The Department of Biology and Environmental Science is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities within this multidisciplinary department include the areas of aquatic ecology, cell and organism biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, environmental science and environmental engineering as well as disease ecology. The marine microbiology research group in Kalmar seeks a research engineer for studies of the ecology of marine microorganisms.
Project description
Microorganisms are major drivers of biogeochemical cycles in the sea, but molecular detail on how they impact on particular element cycles remains largely unknown. Primary tasks for the candidate will be to carry out laboratory analyses to resolve how the availability key nutrients and environmental factors influence the growth of specific microbial groups or species (e.g. eukaryotic phytoplankton, cyanobacteria and bacteria), and to analyse which molecular and physiological features that allow particular microorganisms to be successful under distinct environmental conditions. Experimental work will be done with isolates and communities, but also includes some computational analyses. Methods will involve state-of-the-art techniques in microbiology and molecular biology (e.g. measurements of growth rates, (meta) transcriptomics, and quantitative assessments of gene expression).
The work will be framed in larger interdisciplinary research projects in collaboration with scientists from Daniel Conley's research group at Lund University as well as scientists within the framework of the Centre for Ecology and Evolution in Microbial model Systems (EEMiS) at Linnaeus University that comprises expertise in ecology, evolution, and microbiology. The research is also connected to the strong research environment ECOCHANGE.
Entry requirements
A person fulfils the general entry requirements if he/she has:
• A master degree in biology, molecular biology, microbial ecology, or equivalent (at least 240 credits, of which 60 credits on second-cycle level).
• Experience with advanced molecular biology methods (e.g. [meta] transcriptomics), quantitative PCR, and bioinformatics.
• Experience of working in the field and familiarity with microbial ecology methods and experimental design.
• Expertise in performing mesocosm or microcosm experiments with natural marine microbial assemblages and/or cultured bacterial isolates.
Other assessment grounds;
• High proficiency in written and spoken English.
• Ability to work independently to solve problems.
• Capacity to interact well in a research group (i.e. team-work).
The application (in English) should contain a CV (with telephone and e-mail), documentation of exams and grades, an application letter describing personal motivation and experiences relevant to the research project, and any other documentation that the applicant would like to present. The candidates should also provide contact details (including telephone number and e-mail address) of two reference persons. Please apply no later than April 1, 2019
