Institutionen för växtskyddsbiologi
The Department of Plant Protection Biology, at SLU, is an interdisciplinary constellation, encompassing Chemical Ecology, Resistance Biology and Integrated Plant Protection research units, providing excellent opportunities for strong research collaboration within and outside the departmental area. Research efforts at the department are directed towards both fundamental and applied research. Applied plant protection research is carried out in collaboration with industry and focuses primarily on the development of environmentally sustainable pest and disease control strategies for agriculture and horticulture, both in Sweden and internationally.

In the Integrated Plant Protection unit, we aim to generate knowledge towards the development of sustainable pest and disease management solutions based on conceptual theory and empirical eco-evolutionary, molecular and genetic data that can meet the needs of current and evolving plant production systems.

Duties:
The research engineer will be expected to work with molecular techniques, cytology, biochemistry, advanced microbiology and greenhouse and field assays of plant pests including oomycete and fungal pathogens. You will also be in charge of daily laboratory management, ordering and organising consumables for molecular projects in the lab. You will also run your own projects and be expected to work independently in a highly organised fashion. You will be expected to contribute both practically to projects as well as to the writing of reports and scientific publications resulting from your experimental work.

Qualifications:
You should have a Masters as well as significant research experience in either molecular plant pathology, microbiology, molecular biology, plant sciences, crop protection, biotechnology, or plant genetics. Strong skills in molecular biology are essential, and you should ideally be familiar with qPCR analysis, routine cultivation of oomycete and fungal cultures, fluorescent microscopy, in vitro and greenhouse cultivation of potato, strawberry or other plants and have experience in field work. Practical experience in the use of RNAi or transformation of oomycete pathogens is highly meritorious. A strong command of written and spoken English is essential and an advanced level of Swedish is highly advantageous. Proven experience in contributing to peer-reviewed scientific articles is also of benefit. Excellent collaborative skills, high motivation and enthusiasm are important, as well as ability to work both independently and in a team. Personal skills are therefore an important part of the evaluation. An interest in both basic and applied research, the ability to work on several projects at once and leadership or practical laboratory supervision experience are also regarded as highly meritorious. A driving licence is also required.
