Department of Astronomy. Reference number SU FV-0130-14.
The Institute for Solar Physics is a research institute within the Department of Astronomy. It is also a national infrastructure supported by the Swedish Research Council and is responsible for the operations of the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope (SST) on the Canary Island of La Palma. A project aimed at investigating the dynamics of the solar chromosphere will use a new filter-based instrument at the SST (named CHROMIS) which will be developed, and an existing similar instrument (CRISP). Both CHROMIS and CRISP are narrow-band filters used for rapid scanning through spectral lines. There are other instruments at the telescope giving complementary data. All observations at the SST produces large data volumes, often 1 TB per hour, only the best data are transferred to Stockholm where they are treated with advanced image reconstruction software developed in-house. We work mainly in a Linux environment and use C/C++ and IDL.
The main responsibility of the research engineer is to develop software for CHROMIS and CRISP, and to take care of calibration and documentation of these instruments and their software. The overall goal with the work is to optimise the quality of scientific data and to simplify data processing for the users. Travel to La Palma and interactions with guest researchers is a necessary part of the work.
The work tasks may include:

The work tasks may include:
• development of software for control, calibration, and characterisation of
the instruments CHROMIS and CRISP.
• participation in the preparatory work for the installation of CHROMIS and testing work before and after its delivery.
• calibration and evaluation of CHROMIS and CRISP.
• participation in the development of methods and software for data
processing.
• reporting and documentation work.
• participation in development and improvement work of other
instrumentation.
• assisting with data processing.
• participation in the construction and management of data bases.
Eligibility
To be qualified for the position, you must have at least a Master degree in astronomy, physics, engineering physics, or computer science. Work
experience after the degree related to solar-physics instrumentation or similar (like other astronomical instrumentation) is required. Good programming skills in C/C++ and/or IDL and good knowledge in Linux. You must be proficient in spoken and written English and be able to cooperate with staff and guest researchers using the SST on La Palma. A PhD is not required but will be considered as an additional qualification.
The employment is full time and starts with a six-month trial period.
Salaries are set individually. The position is to be filled as soon as possible. Application, preferably in English, shall include a personal letter, CV and other documents describing the merits.
