The Unit for Field-based Forest Research (www.slu.se/en/departments/field-based-forest-research) at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU)/Faculty of Forest Sciences, is hiring a qualified research engineer in the area of micrometeorology and environmental field measurements. The successful candidate will join a team of in total 15 research engineers and technicians at the research station Svartberget, with operational responsibility for the research activities within, and in the vicinity of, the Vindeln Experimental Forests. The Unit for Field-based Forest Research also includes other research stations situated in Tönnersjöheden, Asa, and Siljansfors. All of these research stations have an extended responsibility for the scientific quality in the field trial operations since they all have permanent staff employed at the stations.

Svartberget is contributing to three Swedish national research infrastructures; ICOS Sweden (Integrated Carbon Observation System; www.icos-sweden.se), also being part of the European research infrastructure ICOS RI focusing on monitoring and understanding the greenhouse gas balance; ACTRIS Sweden (Aerosol, Clouds and Trace Gases Research Infrastructure; www.actris.se) as part of the European research infrastructure ACTRIS, as well as SITES (Swedish Infrastructure for Ecosystem Science; www.fieldsites.se). The research infrastructures include extensive automated and manual measuring programs aiming to understand the ecology, biogeochemistry, land-atmosphere exchange and management of boreal ecosystems. Vindeln Experimental Forests have over the years hosted numerous national and international research projects including scholars, Post-Docs, PhD-students, MSc- and BSc-students. The Unit for Field-based Forest Research provides support for field data collection in research projects and manages the contribution of the Svartberget research station to these three national infrastructures.

Duties:

The main tasks for this open position include the maintenance and further development of the ICOS field research infrastructures and the ongoing measuring programs at two ground-based Ecosystem stations (Degerö and Svartberget) and one Atmosphere station (Svartberget) with a 150 m tall mast. Daily duties include field work in relation to maintenance of sensors, data loggers and multiplexers, troubleshooting and calibration, as well as office work related to programming and handling of data (transfer, quality check and deliveries). In addition, you will also be involved in the direct support of other ongoing research projects. To some extent the position can be tailored to the strengths and interests of individual applicants. The job involves both being in a team and doing solitary work. We consider being a team player a valuable quality.

Required qualifications:

• Master degree, or comparable, in engineering, physics, or environmental science, and related field experience.
• Knowledge in environmental measurement sensors, meteorological sensors, gas analyzers, data loggers and associated programing languages is essential.
• Experience in maintenance and repair of scientific instruments in the lab or in the field.
• Experience and proficiency in one or more software languages such as Matlab, Python, or R.
• Ability to maintain flexibility in scheduling and prioritizing work tasks to complement a team with a common goal.
• Being a team player in contributing to the development of the group and the station.
• Good physical condition, health test will be provided for training to work in the mast.
• Valid Swedish driver's license for cars, or an equivalent international license.
• Fluent in written and spoken English.

Qualifications considered a merit:

• A strong merit is experience with eddy covariance measurements/micrometeorological theory.
• Creative skills for the development and fabrication of scientific equipment.
• Familiarity with or experience in an academic research environment; a PhD degree in one of the fields listed above is a strong merit.
• Experience of working with GIS.

Place of work:
The position is based at Svartberget research station, located about 70 km (one hour drive) from the SLU Forest Faculty in Umeå. With good opportunities for both child and elderly care, and a wide range of housing, Vindeln is a safe and friendly place to live. With short distances to neighbouring municipalities such as Umeå and Vännäs, there are also good opportunities for commuting for those who live elsewhere.
