The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment (www.slu.se/aquatic-sciences) is working with applied environmental science, with a national responsibility for assessing the condition of Swedish surface waters with respect to water chemistry, pollution and aquatic biota. The department has some 100 employees. The research focuses on geochemical and hydrological processes, aquatic ecology and biodiversity, as well as on aquatic ecotoxicology and environmental chemistry. The department is part of a Soil-Water-Environment cluster, a recently established competence center for landscape-level processes that also includes the Departments of 'Soil and Environment' and 'Energy and Technology'. The breadth of expertise among the 300 members in combination with a well-equipped infrastructure creates a unique platform for high quality research as well as environmental monitoring and assessment.
Duties:

The work will entail cultivation-independent analysis of different types of microorganisms from environmental samples, including the entire workflow from extraction to quality control and advanced preparation of DNA and RNA for sequence analysis and quantification of genetic markers and microbial populations with quantitative PCR, FISH and related methods. The position also entails maintenance of equipment and procurement of consumables for the work. You are also expected to train and supervise students and researchers in the use of these methods and contribute to documentation and analysis of the lab work. The Department research laboratories is a dynamic and stimulating workplace with potential for future career development and opportunities to also work with other biological methods such as flow cytometry, microscopy and microbial experiments. Tasks will vary depending on active projects and may also be adapted to fit the profile of the successful applicant.
Qualifications:
As a minimum requirement, the successful candidate will have a university degree (preferably at Masters or PhD level) in biology, molecular biology, bioengineering or related subject. Candidates are also required to demonstrate solid knowledge and previous experience of practical laboratory work that includes the handling and analysis of DNA and/or RNA with modern molecular biology techniques. Other methodological expert skills relavant for the position are considered as merits. We are looking for a candidate who can work independently and in a structured manner, with attention to detail and proper documentation of the work performed. Experience of method development in nucleic acid-analyses and instrument operation/maintenance will strengthen your application. You will be interacting with many researchers and students and need good collaboration and communication skills. Good command of the English language is a requirement.
The application should contain your CV, diploma and a brief personal letter describing your interest in the position and what you will bring to the group. You should also provide names and contact information for two personal references
