Research assistant for project on mining development corridors in the Southern African Development Community

About the Nordic Africa Institute

The Nordic Africa Institute is a Swedish government agency and has a unique mandate to produce research and inform policy which is relevant to support development in Africa. The Institute has since its establishment in 1962 been an important research, documentation and information centre on modern Africa in the Nordic countries. NAI is jointly financed by the governments of Sweden, Finland and Iceland, and promotes research on and knowledge of contemporary Africa in the Nordic countries, as well as cooperation between mainly African and Nordic researchers. The Institute also disseminates information on current African issues, through publications, seminars, conferences and various policy-related activities.

Job Description

This research assistant position's role is to support the consolidation of research on Africa's Copperbelt Agenda for its Strategic Minerals. The assistant shall participate in research, events and publication processes and assist in outreach to Nordic and African decision-makers.

We prefer that the applicant lives within commuting distance from Uppsala.

Key duties

• Reviewing and writing up summaries of news, policy documents and announcements on mining related infrastructural developments (rail, road, port, energy, border infrastructure) in the Southern African Development Community (with a specific focus on those connected to Zambia)
• Mapping of actors (local, national and global) involved in these infrastructural developments and charting financial commitments announced.
• Locating maps and images related to these developments
• Literature search and review of academic work written in relation to mining related infrastructure development in this region).
• Organizing related research material in an accessible filing format.
• Supporting the organization of workshops and policy events.

Qualifications and required skills

• Master's degree in Rural Development and Natural Resource Management, Human Geography, Sustainable Development or equivalent topic (or ongoing degree to be finished before the start of the employment)
• Strong organizational and analytical skills.
• Excellent writing skills
• A good command of spoken and written English.
• The research assistant will be supervised by a NAI researcher but should have an ability to work independently.

Desirable/merit

• Knowledge on mining and natural resource governance in Africa (ideally countries covering the Southern African Development Community countries).
• Good knowledge of software for qualitative and spatial data analysis
• Some knowledge of African research centers, networks and universities.
• Academic or policy research publication record

Emphasis should be placed on areas related to Climate, Natural Resources and Sustainability.
