hela Sverige The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is seeking a Research Assistant to support the work of the Dual-use and Arms Trade Control Programme.
SIPRI is an independent international institute whose core mission is to undertake research and activities on security, conflict and peace. SIPRI's research agenda has long focused on issues relating to dual-use and arms trade controls. The work of SIPRI's dual-use and arms trade controls programme seeks to raise the quality of information available on national, multilateral and international export control systems and standards as well as promoting further improvements in all of these areas. This involves producing research and publications, developing tools and concepts, conducting seminars and other awareness-raising activities, and carrying out capacity-building efforts.
Recent projects have involved mapping efforts to build state capacity in areas relevant to Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) implementation, examining the impact of rapidly advancing technologies on the implementation of dual-use items and arms trade controls, and assessing efforts to implement these controls more effectively. Main tasks
The Research Assistant will be responsible for helping to ensure that externally-funded projects are implemented as well as supporting other aspects of the Dual-Use and Arms Trade Control Programme's core work.
Main tasks will include:
• Assisting with research on the development and implementation of international and regional standards in dual-use and arms trade controls and small arms and light weapons (SALW) controls;
• Assisting in project output dissemination;
• Assisting in fundraising activities;
• Assisting in organizing events; and
• Contributing to a pleasant and stimulating intellectual and work environment at SIPRI.
Requirements
The successful candidate must have:
• A minimum of a University degree - preferably at the Master's level or equivalent - in Political Science, International Relations, Conflict Studies or a related field;
• Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills, including being a teamplayer;
• An ability to engage easily with senior officials;
• An ability to work independently, organize, and manage time effectively;
• Solid research skills; and
• Fluency in English both written and spoken (although knowledge of Swedish is not required additional languages will be seen as an advantage).
Some knowledge of the different national, regional and international agreements and instruments in field of SALW controls and/or dual-use and arms trade controls is an advantage, as is experience in dealing with the diplomatic community.
Contract period
Starting from 1 May 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter. The appointment will be for one-year period. The successful candidate's employment at SIPRI may be subject to renewal depending on their profile and available funds. The post is full-time and the successful applicant will be expected to reside in Stockholm. The salary package will be negotiated individually.
