The Department of Ecology conducts research for sustainable agriculture, forest production and biological conservation. At the Department of Ecology our research group focuses on plant-plant interactions in crop fields with different levels of plant diversity achieved by mixing different crop species or cultivars. We investigate the biological mechanisms behind these interactions, focusing on how different plant species and varieties communicate using chemical signals and contribute to enhance biological pest control and how these interactions can be applied in development of sustainable crop protection strategies.

We are looking for a researcher to join us in EU-funded research project OrganicYieldsUp aimed to contribute to a sustainable increase in yields in organic cropping systems through a comprehensive and structured compilation and evaluation of existing knowledge. Within this project, you will analyze and reflect on the suitability of approaches to increase yields across local sites with diverse pedoclimatic and structural conditions in Europe. You will develop and maintain networks in the organic agriculture, administration and research environment, nationally and internationally. The researcher is expected to be a collaborator on research projects in chemical ecology and plant-insect interactions, which is the main research focus of the group. The research will investigate the effect of volatile mediated plant-plant interactions on insect olfactory behaviour, movement and activity. It is expected that the new researcher will obtain projects through his own applications and by participating in project development in national and international consortia. You will work in a group of senior researchers, post-docs and PhD students, mostly in ecology but also cooperate with researchers.
Your profile
We are looking for a talented and motivated researcher who has a strong interest in ecology, and who is actively pursuing an academic career. Candidates must have completed and defended their PhD in agronomy, ecology or entomology or a related field. Post-doctoral experience is preferred.
The candidate should be able to quickly understand new research questions, identify the key issues and make situational judgements on how to proceed. The successful candidate will be part of a group of international researchers with different backgrounds and needs to be able to work in a group as well as independently. Selection of the successful applicant is mainly based on scientific skills and research experience in one or more of the following areas: sustainable crop production, as well as knowledge in design and performance of laboratory experiments on plan-plant and plant-insect interactions.
Prior experience in utilising olfactometer bioassays and tracking insect movement in NoldusEtho Vision in understanding the behavioural responses of insects to chemical stimuli will be considered as a benefit. Evidence on experience on preparation of project applications and project management is an advantage. Candidate must have ability to write reports legibly and accurately. Willingness to be involved in multiple projects that run in parallel will be merit. Much emphasis in our recruitment will be placed on personal qualities and soft skills, e.g. high degree of self-motivation, the ability to work tidily, effectively, responsibly and congenially in a group context with shared facilities.
