The Environment, Safety, Health and Quality (ESH&Q) Division, reporting to the associate Director of ESH&Q, is responsible for activities connected to radiological protection and occupational safety, environmental monitoring and safe radioactive waste management. The latter comprises radioactive inventory assessment and tracking, waste streams handling, characterisation, documentation and quality assured procedures from radioactive waste generation to discharge. The ESH&Q Division consists of two groups: The Radiation Protection (RP) Group and the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Group. The Radioactive Waste Management is included in the RP Group services.

Description of main responsibilities


The main task and responsibility for the Radioactive Waste Engineer is to assist and support the radioactive waste manager in all tasks of ESS radioactive waste programme, which is part of the services provided by the ESS RP Group. The radioactive waste programme involves all activities concerning waste type classification, inventory characterisation and tracking, handling, treatment, storage and transport of radioactive waste. This requires good knowledge of the Swedish radioactive waste disposal practice and procedures applied by SKB.

As the Radioactive Waste Engineer, you will:

• support the Radioactive Waste Manager in all relevant tasks within the RP Group activities and services;
• ensure compliance with the environmental and radiological permits and conditions, Swedish and ESS rules and procedures regarding radioactive waste handling and discharge;
• assess and classify different waste streams for the radiological and material content by means of numerical and experimental methods;
• implement appropriate scaling techniques to correlate key nuclides with other declarable nuclides and radioactive waste material;
• get deeply involved with the nuclear data base management and tracking/documentation system to be implemented in accordance with licensing and regulatory requirements;
• develop and implement numerical and statistical methods to assess expected waste stream and forecast future volumes and radiotoxicity values;
• understand and supervise activity measurement and radioactive waste characterisation methods and their conditioning treatment, on-site or off-site;
• prepare documents for radioactive waste management and decommissioning compliant with regulatory requirements;
• support effective deployment of ESS-wide policies, processes, systems and procedures ensuring that at all times the ESS remains compliant.
• Liaise and maintain close contact with coordinating authorities, cooperating and subsidiary partners.

Required qualifications:

You have a well-developed ability to cooperate, listen, consult colleagues and to communicate proactively with a high level of integrity. You have:

• documented experience in radioactive waste management tasks and the willingness to extend your experience and skills;
• documented experience of experimental and numerical assessment of waste streams and nuclides inventory determination;
• a degree in nuclear engineering or science in an appropriate discipline with relevant experience;
• an expertise in numerical and statistical methods (Monte Carlo, Fluka, Python, HTML, MaxEnt/Bayesian statistical methods etc. applied to real materials);
• knowledge of the European and/or Swedish regulations.
• good communication skills in English, knowledge of the Swedish language or the readiness to learn it would be expected.

Duration and location
The position is permanent with six a months' probation period. The position is to be filled as soon as possible. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
