ESS is now looking for an RF Engineer for the RF Group organised within the Accelerator Division and Machine Directorate. The RF Group is responsible for defining, designing, installing, commissioning and finally for operating and maintaining the RF systems and amplifiers required for the accelerator and test stands at ESS.
Job description
Initially as RF engineer your main responsibilities will be to carry out testing of the RF systems already installed, support with installation and later the role will include system operation both with and without beam. Once you have gained experience with the RF systems at ESS, the role may evolve into supervision or support of additional test teams.
You will be working closely with the different technical disciplines within the RF group such as High power amplifiers, interlock systems, LLRF and a multitude of other subsystems as well as the other teams both within the Accelerator Division and other divisions.
Your main areas of responsibilities as an RF Engineer will be to:
• Coordinate, carry out and document system setup and RF system testing;
• Conditioning and test of high power amplifiers and high power components;
• Support and supervision of additional test teams;
• Suppport operations with system handover and supervision;
• Manage installation of future systems and RF projects to improve performance and reliability;
• Carry out fault analysis both during the test phases and later in operations with the view of improving performance and reliability;
• Assist with planning and budgeting for assigned projects;
• Oversee and plan for operational and shut down activities;
• Work with, and direct, In-Kind partners and industrial partners.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a broad background in several disciplines relevant for RF systems as well as experience of installation, commissioning and operation of complex, preferably high power RF systems for accelerators. The subsystems include high power sources, solid state amplifiers, RF distribution, phase reference lines, LLRF, power supplies and auxiliary systems, interlock systems and controls.
You will have a strong academic background such as a Physics, Electrical Engineering or RF Engineering degree or a higher qualification. In addition, you can demonstrate an aptitude towards learning and have the desire to develop yourself and others within this field.
We truly believe that you have:
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to efficiently interact with individuals and teams at all levels in the organisation;
• The ability to follow the details whilst maintaining a clear and critical view of the bigger picture;
• An open-minded, organised, conscientious and result-orientated approach;
• A strong team player mentality: You have excellent social skills and are easy to work with, yet you will not be easily distracted and lose focus on your current tasks;
• Advanced, yet broad, technical knowledge in relevant disciplines;
• The ability to take initiative as appropriate and adopt well to changes in priorities and can prioritise and organise your own work and that of others;
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of Swedish would be an advantage.
Skills & Experience
• Skills and experience with RF terminology and relevant test equipment such as VNAs, spectrum analysers, signal generators, RF power meters and oscilloscopes are required;
• Experience with RF calculations including VSWR, s-parameter, RF losses and the dB scale;
• Experience with complex high power RF systems preferably with an accelerator background;
• Experience and familiarity of carrying out testing systematically and carefully;
• Hands-on experience with design, test and operation;
• You have an excellent attention to detail;
• Able to read and follow electrical schematics for fault finding;
• Knowledge of support systems such as electrical distribution, cooling and ventilation;
• Familiarity of EPICS or similar control systems while not essential is an advantage;
• Ability to work within all established ESS regulatory frameworks.
Duration & Location
The position is permanent with a six month initial probationary period. This role may require occasional shift work and on-call duties.
