MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund University.

It provides scientists from Sweden as well as internationally, with state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually, conducting ground-breaking experiments in materials and life sciences using the brilliant X-ray light.

Your team
The Safety group is responsible for promoting, developing and enabling a safe work environment for staff, users and visitors. The work conducted by the Safety group ranges from radiation safety, chemical safety, experimental safety, and environmental safety, to systematic work environment and security. The work culture in the Safety group is open and transparent and every group member is encouraged to take own initiative and contribute to further development of the Safety group and MAX IV Laboratory.

Would you like to work at the brightest lightsource in the world?

The MAX IV are looking for an applied mathematician/physicist with strong mathematical skills

The candidate will participate in realistic Monte Carlo simulations of the MAX IV accelerators and beamlines related to radiation safety. This includes implementing, running and processing the results from a full facility radiation transport model, to design and verify the biological shielding requirements and apply simulations for improving scientific output of instrument measurements. We are developing in-house tools to provide rapid detailed geometric description of the whole facility. We are looking for a person with strong mathematical skills that can interface between the geometry and the physics, to provide numerical variance reduction, and propagation of functional probabilistic risks into the final risk assessments.

Your main work tasks will be

- Radiation safety simulations for the accelerators and beamlines.
- Design of radiation shielding components for the accelerators and beamlines.
- Develop the tooling to streamline the workflow.
- Prepare radiological risk assessment reports for the competent authorities.
- Utilize high-level mathematics to enable the rapid convergence of Monte Carlo simulations.
- Daily radiation safety operation of the facility.

To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications

The successful candidate has a PhD degree in mathematics / physics or other subject of relevance for the position. In addition to this, the candidate should have the following qualifications:

- Strong mathematics background and ability to apply a broad range of mathematical techniques to problems.
- Ability to provide computational code that can solve problems and integrate it into existing frameworks.
- Ability to work in a team, good communication skills, and a good command of English is necessary.

Below are seen as merits

- Ability to provide mathematical support for our calculation development, e.g. geometric algebra, Boolean algebra optimization, field theory or transport theory.
- Strong knowledge of C++.
- Knowledge of programmed geometry Monte-Carlo systems, e.g. Geant4, CombLayer.
- Monte Carlo simulation experience.
- Experience with radiation shielding calculations.
- Particle transport physics knowledge.

As a person you are a strong communicator and a team player.

What we offer

When you join our MAX IV family, you step into a world of cutting edge science. We make the invisible, visible, by supporting scientists from all over the world, generating scientific results for the benefit of society.
