The project includes the most powerful linear proton accelerator ever constructed, a five-tonne, helium cooled tungsten target wheel, 15 state of the art neutron instruments, a suite of laboratories, and a supercomputing data management and software development centre. In the context of its history and future as a scientific organisation, however, it is more than the sum of its parts. It is a brand-new Big Science organisation, and we are building it from the ground up.
Come and build the future of science with us!
About the role
The Environment, Safety, Health & Security (ESH&S) Division at ESS develops, supports, monitors, and assures the implementation of policies, rules, processes, objectives, and best practices at all levels of the organisation in matters of ESH & Security.
The Radiation Protection (RP) Group, part of the ESH&S Division, safeguards ESS personnel and the public from ionising radiation related to ESS activities. The 12-member team is seeking a Radiation Protection Technician to support the organisation as it moves towards steady state operations in 2028 and beyond.
As a Radiation Protection Technician, you will help maintain a safe environment by reducing radiation doses and mitigating exposure risks. The role involves a variety of daily radiation protection tasks across all ESS facilities including the accelerator, target station, experimental stations, and radioactive waste handling areas. Flexibility and adaptability to changing work tasks are important. You will perform duties under the supervision of the RPO and RPE functions.
Main responsibilities:
•
Provide general support to the RPO with everyday tasks (both hands-on and investigative).
•
Perform radiation and contamination surveys.
•
Assist in record-keeping of dosimetry measurements.
•
Perform and advise employees in the decontamination of spaces and equipment.
•
Handle, package, store, and ship radioactive waste and radioactive materials.
•
Review and approve radiation work permits.
•
Assist with development of the dosimetry management system DosiServ.
•
Instruct ESS employees and others in proper radiation protection procedures.
This role requires on-call duty and may in the future require shift work, which will be compensated according to our collective agreement. When you are called in during on-call duty, you should be able to arrive at ESS within one hour.
This is a permanent position based in Lund, Sweden, and we need someone who can start as soon as practically possible. There is a probationary period of six months. We expect the first year to focus on building the foundation for your next steps in your career at ESS, and we will provide support and training.
About you
It is beneficial if you have practical experience in radiation protection work, for example from nuclear power plants, hospitals, research facilities, or other areas where work is performed in an ionising radiation environment. You may have a university degree or other relevant education/experience in radiation physics or a similar field.
You may have a few years of professional experience working with, for example, radiation detection equipment, personal dosimetry systems, radionuclide measurement techniques, transport of hazardous materials, and supporting or training other people in matters of radiation protection. You are familiar with and adhere to laws, rules, and regulations in the radiation protection area.
Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is a must. Fluency in Swedish, both written and spoken, is an advantage. It is also an advantage if you have worked in an international environment.
As a person, you are a team player who interacts effectively with many internal and external stakeholders. You enjoy working with people from different backgrounds and areas of expertise, and you can find the right balance between being flexible and service-minded, yet assertive and firm. You are curious and eager to develop and share your knowledge with others. You can easily adapt to changes on short notice.
If you see yourself in what we're looking for, please provide your CV and motivation letter in English by clicking on "apply" and following the instructions. Please be aware that we can only accept direct applications made via the ESS website.
