hela Sverige The European Spallation Source ERIC (ESS) is a partnership organisation of 13 European member countries located in the city of Lund, Sweden. The ESS is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. The project includes the most powerful linear proton accelerator ever built, a five-tonne, helium-cooled tungsten target wheel, 15 state-of-the-art neutron instruments, a suite of laboratories, and a supercomputing data management and software development centre. In the context of its history and future as a scientific organisation, however, it is more than the sum of its parts. It is a brand new Big Science organisation and we are building it from the ground up.
Come and build the future of Science with us!
About the role
The Environment, Safety, Health & Security (ESH&S) Division at ESS develops, supports, monitors and assures the implementation of policies, rules, processes, objectives and best practices at all levels of the organisation in matters of ESH & Security.
The Radiation Protection (RP) Group is a part of the ESH&S Division, and ensures that personnel on the ESS site and the public are protected from potentially harmful effects of ionising radiation linked to ESS activities. The group, currently consisting of 12 staff members, is now seeking to appoint an additional Radiation Protection Technician, to support the organisation on its path to Steady State Operations in 2028 and beyond.
As Radiation Protection Technician, you will follow up radiation protection tasks in the ESS facility which includes the accelerator, the target station, the experimental stations and the radioactive waste handling facilities.
Your main areas of responsibilities, together with your team, will be to:
• Perform radiation and contamination surveys.
• Take part in the ALARA preparation and follow-up various activities in radiation areas and storage areas for radioactive material or waste. This includes:
• review and approval of radiation work permits.
• take part in the work and dose planning of workers and users.
• exchange of dosimeters for workers, work places and environmental monitoring as well as the record keeping of dosimetry measurements.
• Assist with development of the dosimetry management system.
• Instruct ESS employees and others in proper radiation protection procedures.
• Maintain survey records in our radiological monitoring programme.
• Carry out routine source and efficiency checks of radiation detection equipment.
• Perform and advise employees in the decontamination of spaces and equipment and the handling, packaging, storing, and shipping of radioactive wastes and radioactive material.
• Perform radiometric analysis of various samples in the RP laboratories.
• Assist in managing the RP laboratories.
This is a permanent position based in Lund, Sweden, and we need someone who can start as soon as practically possible. Probationary period six months.
This role requires on-call duty and may in future require shift work, which will be compensated for according to our collective agreement.
About you
To be successful in this position we believe you have a university degree or other education that we deem relevant, in radiation physics or similar field.
You have a few years' professional experience from working with radiation, for example detection equipment, personal dosimetry systems, radionuclide measurement techniques, transport of hazardous materials, and supporting and training other people. You are familiar with and take a great interest in laws, rules and regulations in the radiation area, and adhering to them comes naturally to you.
Your previous experience could be from a lab, hospital, powerplant or research facility, to name some examples.
Furthermore, you have general IT and computer skills, and you are used to learning new IT systems. Fluency in written and spoken English is a requirement as it is the working language at ESS, and fluency in Swedish is an advantage, in order to communicate easily with Swedish authorities. It is also an advantage if you have worked in an international environment.
As a person you enjoy communicating and collaborating with a large number of internal and external stakeholders. You enjoy discussions with people with different backgrounds and areas of expertise, and can find the balance between being flexible and service-minded, and assertive and firm.
