You will lead the Material Technology & Energy Storage team at ABB Corporate Research in Västerås Sweden. The role of ABB Corporate Research is to ensure ABB's technology leadership now and in the future.
In the Material Technology & Energy Storage team we focus on developing sustainable solutions within the product segments of motors, switchgear, and energy storage systems (batteries, fuel cells). Our R&D topics include novel materials, surface science and engineering, advanced manufacturing solutions and energy storage devices. The research activities are usually formulated as technology pre-study and technology development projects. We work closely with ABB's business to ensure our research will bring unique value for ABB business. At the same time, we have close collaboration with the academic world to bridge the academic and industrial research.
In this position you will be reporting to the Department Manager of Energy Conversion.
Your responsibilities
Drive and foster a culture of innovation within the team and department.
Ensure that research projects deliver on-time, high quality results in alignment with strategic directions.
Make sure the research strategy and roadmap is contributing to the future success of ABB Businesses.
Work with talent management of the individuals in the team, giving feedback on performance, coaching, providing development and career opportunities.
Manage and coordinate team resources and budget in alignment with strategic directions. Plan capacity, people and resources for R&D projects.
Build, develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external contacts such as: customers, partners, universities. Actively contribute to scientific and technical bodies both inside and outside ABB.
Promote ABB R&D to foster cooperation and knowledge sharing with external resources and communities.

Your background
PhD or Master 's degree in a material (metals or polymers) relevant science or engineering discipline with several years of applied research and technology development experience, preferably with a few years in projects concerning material sustainability and/or eco-design of products.
Experience of material applications in electrical/mechanical products is an advantage.
Additional trainings on sustainability and/or circular economy and also knowledge and experience of environmental legislations and sustainability standards will be valued.
Fluency in English is a must, written and spoken alike.
