We monitor, identify and develop the latest technologies in close collaboration with our business units, ABB's customers and leading universities worldwide.
We are currently 19 researchers in the Mechatronics Group with core competencies within the areas of virtual & physical prototyping, robot applications, actuators & motion control and sensors & electronics. An important aspect of our competence is the ability to develop and exploit multidisciplinary modeling of mechatronics systems including electronics, control, and mechanics. Our activities include mainly long term R&D projects but also short term support. We have in-house access to prototyping tools such as 3D-printer, lab facilities for testing as well as a modern computational cluster capable of demanding simulations.
As Researcher in the Mechatronics Group at ABB Corporate Research, you will develop ABB products by employing mechatronics methods for developing and integrating optimized motion solutions.
Products will continue to become more integrated, where the product performance is a result of combination of mechanics, electronics and control. The optimization of products then requires a multi-domain approach to product development, which involves mechatronics system modeling and simulations, design and design optimization. Examples of products are industrial robots, industrial crane systems, motors and contactors. In robotics, the volume and the width of applications of controlled motion will increase in future. This, together with the expansion of ABB portfolio of products such as large (MW) mechanical power transmissions including gear engineering and sealing solutions, increase the competence need in machine elements. We therefore need to strengthen our team in these area. Other exciting challenges in this field are the introduction of new materials and coatings.
Your principal role in this position will be to conduct research and development in the area of drive train design. You should strive to be an authority within this area with competence in mechanics, engineering materials (e.g. heat treatment), fatigue and tribology. As such, it is also part of your role to monitor the state-of-the-art methodology and technology in this area in both academia and industry and promote the use of such methodology and technology within ABB global organization.
You have a technical Ph.D in relevant area, or a master?s degree together with a few years? successful experience in tribology and mechanical drive train design. To succeed in this position, you should be capable to work both independently and in a team, and to establish collaborations both ABB internally and externally with leading research organizations and universities. You will be working in an international environment. It is therefore required that you have good communication skills in English, both orally and in writing.
