JOB DESCRIPTION
We are seeking a R&D Chemist to support our pilot plant activities in Bäckhammar, Sweden. Lixea has received a grant from the EIC to build a pilot plant for our novel chemical process, which uses ionic liquids to fractionate wood biomass into cellulose, lignin and by-products. The pilot plant will be used to optimise the process for process economics and product quality, which will require analysis of different process streams as well as the isolated products. Bench-scale experiments will be carried out for trouble shooting and benchmarking.
By joining the team, you will work in a fast-paced R&D environment alongside world-leading researchers and ambitious entrepreneurs in sustainable solvent technologies. You will also get first-hand experience of research and development work in biorefining, joining the fight for a more sustainable future.
SCOPE OF THE ROLE
Key responsibilities:
• Carry out lab tests to analyse process streams from the pilot plant, such as water content measurements and
• Carry out bench-scale experiments for trouble shooting and benchmarking of the pilot-scale results
• Produce cellulose and lignin from lignocellulosic input materials under various conditions at a lab-scale using the proprietary ionic liquid-based process and characterise them for further product development activities
• Characterise cellulose and lignin produced in the pilot plant and work with the Product Development Chemist to optimise product quality based on findings from laboratory scale and commercially available products
Specific tasks related to the EIC project:
• Pre-pilot studies
• Produce lab-scale samples of cellulose and lignin
• Using lab-scale samples of cellulose and lignin, validate target applications
• Support the production of a product properties and applications dossier as well as a small catalogue that will be disseminated to prospective customers
• Pilot validation
• Run or arrange various analyses on process streams from the pilot plant, such as trace element analysis, solids content, water content, wastewater analysis, Klason lignin content, cellulose viscosity and particle size
• Run bench-scale tests to trouble shoot problems in the pilot plant
• Confirm the results obtained from pre-pilot tests in this large-scale environment against identified KPIs for the targeted applications
• Suggest changes to the process where necessary in order to improve the process
• Support the production of at least one prototype product from both the cellulose and lignin at the multi-kilo scale with a partner
• Preparation for commercialization and communication
• Communication: Participate in communication activities
In addition to these functions, employees are required to carry out such other duties as may reasonably be required.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
• First degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry or a closely related discipline
• Proven experience in a research environment and experience in following laboratory protocols
• Desired skills and knowledge include:
• Working with lignocellulosic biomass
• Biorefining
• Ionic liquids and corrosion and material compatibility of ionic liquids
• Various analytical techniques, including Karl Fischer titration, cellulose viscosity measurements, Kappa number and Klason lignin content analysis
• Materials chemistry
• Have high level of self-motivation
• Ability to effectively plan and organise work, allowing you to work on multiple projects in parallel
• Flexibility, cooperative approach and the ability to work independently as well as in teams
• Ability to produce clear written reports
• Willingness to learn a broad range of new techniques, follow laboratory protocols and keep accurate and complete records of all your findings
• Have excellent communication skills
