The Challenge Ahead
Reporting to the QA Director, the QA Manager holds ultimate responsibility for smooth delivery of QA end to end on a title, building strong plans, process and strategy from Concept through Alpha/Beta/Final, Launch and Post Launch.
They will work alongside Production, Dev Management and Tech Leads to build strong plans that incorporate Automation, Tech and Defect Prevention/Containment as well as more traditional black box testing methods. They will also partner a variety of other groups across the organization including Publishing, Marketing and Customer Support.
They will own the agreed QA Budget for the title and be responsible for working within it. This covers billable resource, overheads and also budgets for Hardware.
They will be supported by Project Managers and local Development QA and Engineering as well as remote Test Centre and Compliance teams.
The role requires strong Project Management and Communication skills as work will be coordinated between multiple sites and time zones. All groups will need to be clear on plans and strategy and clear status and risk reports to all stakeholders will be needed. The QA Manager needs to ensure all groups are operating as a unified team.
The QA Manager will be responsible for driving best practice within QA and Dev and working in partnership with Dev to identify and mitigate any project risks.
As well as a strong strategic vision the job also needs excellent attention to detail and constant assessment of work quality in order to identify and resolve any issues or misalignment across the various QA groups. The QA Manager should have the ultimate overview of the project and be aware of status and challenges for every QA sub-group.
A strong Quality focus is needed both in terms of QA Deliverables and also product or franchise quality and consistency and competitiveness within the marketplace. There also needs to be a good technical understanding to drive investment in Automation, Tools and Telemetry.
The QA Manager needs to be innovative, flexible, proactive and dedicated. They will drive the QA strategy for a title and have the freedom to define process and best practice across their team. The role is a challenging and exciting one that is also extremely rewarding.
What a QA Manager does at EA:
Be the single point of contact owning the testing of the franchise.
Ensure plans will deliver project on time, quality and budget.
Keep within the franchise QA budget and ensure project stakeholders are aware of the impact to QA budget of any development driven change.
Always understanding the overall project status and skilful in adapting to changes and effectively communicating trade-offs and risks.
Build multiyear, cross discipline plans and assesses skills requirements for current project and next.
Build effective teams and establish Team Goals and delegate assignments, ensure efficient use of resources both locally and remotely.
Define an organization that meets project goals, including necessary behavioural change.
Leads individual contributors and other managers as well as sub-teams through other managers.
Anticipate skill gaps and organizational needs for project and team
