The Chopper Group at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for up to two summer worker positions as Prospect Engineer.

Description of directorate/division

The Chopper Group is part of the Instrument Technologies Division and dedicated to providing and supporting key systems within the facilities suite of scientific instruments. Neutron choppers systems are composed of a number of high speed, rotating electro-mechanical devices which, working in synchronization, perform critical functions within the facilities scientific instruments. The reliability of these systems, throughout years of operation in harsh environments, is critical to the operation and scientific output of the facility. The group has responsibility for definition, development and operation for these unique and cutting edge systems throughout the life of the facility. The group operates within the stimulating environment of the scientific research, and an international construction project working closely with both scientists and other part of the organisation to find solutions for the construction of this world-leading facility.

Description of main responsibilities

The goal for this position is to assist with the mechanical engineering within the Chopper Group. The group has active R&D projects with respect to the instruments being built at the ESS facility. The position would be based within the team of one of these projects providing a great opportunity to gain engineering experience in a flexible and dynamic field.

Tasks could include:

• Designing and dimensioning of components within the field of remote handling compatibility.
• Conceptual and detail design of integration systems.
• Writing of specifications based on requirements documents and previous designs.
• Engineering studies

Qualifications

• A few years of mechanical engineering studies at University level.
• Knowledge of basic structural calculations and dimensioning.
• Experience in CATIA and Office package.
• Competence in engineering studies.
• Excellent oral and written English skills are essential.

Duration & Location

The position is a fixed term/summer work position.

Start date is mid-May, or as soon as possible. End date is 31st July.
