The European Spallation Source (ESS) is a partnership organization of 13 European member countries located in the city of Lund, Sweden. We are currently recruiting for the position of Project Scientist for DREAM. This is a critical role that exists within the Instrument Scientists Group of the Neutron Scattering Systems (NSS) Division. The selected candidate will provide the scientific and technical leadership of the DREAM instrument project. Further, your responsibilities and qualifications will include:

Your role:

• Working with the DREAM Lead Engineer, Lead Scientist and partner institutes, deliver the DREAM instrument to hot commissioning (TG5).
• Working with the DREAM Lead Scientist, develop and deliver the hot commissioning of the instrument, making it ready for user operations.
• Provide expertise in the scientific application of neutron diffraction and in diffraction method development.

Your responsibilities:

• Provide scientific guidance and support to DREAM work package team.
• Support the planning of the DREAM work package and contribute to its implementation.
• Provide a connection to the French neutron scattering community, via collaboration with LLB.
• Represent the project during Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (STAP) and Scientific Advisory Committee reviews.
• Provide requirements to ensure the integration of the scientific capabilities of the instrument software, sample environment and support labs.
• Conduct your own research using neutron and x-ray diffraction and associated methods.
• To a limited extent participate in teaching and outreach activities.

Required qualifications

• PhD in Physics, Chemistry or Materials Science
• At least 10 years experience with neutron diffraction methods and instrumentation
• Experience in building and maintaining experimental infrastructure.
• Experience of working in an international environment.
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite.

Desirable qualifications

• Fluency in French
• Working knowledge of German
• Experience in obtaining grant funding from national and international sources

Duration & Location

The position is a fixed-term, full-time position for 3 years and is located in Lund, Sweden.
