The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is seeking a Project Leader to lead a project that aims to focus international attention on practical steps to address the negative impact of today's environmental crises so as to improve tomorrow's prospects for peace and security.

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is one of the world's foremost peace research institutions and has done much in recent years to bring the linkage between climate change and insecurity to a higher place on the agendas of policy, of practice in international development, and of research. The year 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment, the first major inter-government conference on the environment. Connected to this anniversary and to developments in both the global climate and the global security equation, SIPRI is planning a major international report, provisionally entitled Environment of Peace 2022 (EP 2022).

The primary responsibility of the Project Leader is to run a successful Environment of Peace project including coordinating a major report and an international high-level panel. The Project Leader will act as Executive Secretary of the panel, supported by a project coordinator, an administrative assistant and dedicated communications support.

The Project Leader will be responsible for:

• Understanding how the international debate on climate and security is moving and what is the best way to influence it;
• Facilitating the work of the international panel and liaison with its members;
• Leading a team consisting of the research and writing team, project coordination, administration and communication support;
• Exercising responsibility for the overall budget;
• Fundraising and liaison with potential and current donors.

Requirements

The successful candidate will have as a minimum the following experience:

• A university degree, in disciplines and topics relevant to this post, at Master level;
• Experience in leading projects independently;
• Experience of fundraising and budgeting;
• 2-4 years of managing relationships between different teams and departments;
• Experience of also balancing relationships between different stakeholders with diverse interests and requirements;
• Experience of positions in which it was necessary to work in oral and written English (with further language proficiency a useful asset).

It will also be beneficial if the Project Leader has shown an aptitude for communicating complex scientific concepts to a range of non-scientific target audience, specifically policymakers.

Contract period

Starting as soon as possible. The appointment will be a 2-year contract with possibility of extension. The post is full-time. The salary package will be negotiated individually.

The position of the Project Leader is based in Stockholm and the successful applicant will be expected to reside in Stockholm, Sweden. The position will include extensive travelling. This requirement must of course be balanced by the need to be present in the project as well as by the larger need for work-life balance.

How to apply

Candidates should submit a resume/CV and a one-page cover letter in English.

Please observe that you apply via our electronic application system. Please access the form via the "apply" button at the very end of this page.

The initial closing date for applications is 18 March 2020.
