The European Spallation Source is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. The project includes, among others, the most powerful linear proton accelerator ever built, a five-tonne, helium-cooled tungsten target wheel and several state-of-the-art "neutron beamlines" (later called: "instruments").

The Neutron Scattering Systems division of ESS, together with its European partner institutions, delivers the neutron instruments, the infrastructure and the related key technologies (neutron detectors, rotating choppers, motion control and automation, radiological shielding). These enable the scientific use of the neutrons produced in the facility, at the moment, 15 neutron instruments are in construction at ESS.

About the role:

We are looking for an experienced engineer to support our ESS scientific partners, in the construction of one, or more, instruments. The candidate will be part of an instrument construction team and will coordinate the instrument construction here in Lund.

The position is fixed-term role for 3 years, and the workplace is in Lund, Sweden.

Your main responsibilities and tasks will include:

• Leading, on behalf of the instrument team, the coordination of design and construction activities at ESS, liaising between the instrument partner and the ESS to fulfil the technical and scientific capability of the instrument.

• Preparing and following up the instrument construction schedule, representing the instrument team in project meetings and reporting on the progress of the project.

• Managing risks as directed by the partner's Project Manager, advising of any deviations from the plan, recommend corrective action, and preparation of mitigation actions.

• Reporting over technical and project issues as agreed with the partner's Project Manager and Project Engineers to ensure execution within budget, schedule and expected quality.

• Drafting and editing technical documentation such as technical specifications, design descriptions, installation and maintenance documentation.

• Proactively gathering information and organizing resources needed to perform all tasks outlined above.

• Management of procurement contract on behalf of the instrument team

About you:

• You hold an Engineering master's degree in mechanics, mechatronics, constructions or similar qualification. You have more than 8 year's proven experience in construction of complex mechanical systems or scientific instrumentation.

• 3D design experience is required, familiarity with Catia V6 or similar 3D Cad software is welcome, as well as familiarity with planning tools. You are familiar with drafting and reviewing mechanical drawings and technical documentation, possibly using ISO GPS standard.

• Fluency in written and spoken English is a requirement, as it is the working language at ESS. Knowledge in Swedish, German and/or French is an advantage.

• Work experience with vacuum, ionizing radiation shielding, X-ray or neutron beamlines is advantageous as well as having dealt with installation work in a scientific or technical facility.

• You have leadership and project management experience; you enjoy interacting with colleagues and contractors from different backgrounds, within a multicultural, cross-functional teams, including scientists, engineers, and technicians.

• As a person you take initiative and work proactively, and have the ability to make decisions, in alignment with rules and regulations.
