Welcome to Linnaeus University! A place for knowledge, ideas and development. For growth potential and a belief in the future. In Småland and in the world.

The Department of Chemistry and Biomedical sciences is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities within this multidisciplinary school include the areas of Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, Organic Chemistry, Marine Ecology and Microbiology.

The Bjelic and the Physical Pharmacy Laboratory (PPL) research groups in Kalmar seek a project assistant in protein engineering.

Project title
Investigation of protein toxin interactions with bacterial ion channels

The project
We are interested in studying molecular interactions in biology using a variety of computational and experimental methods. Specifically, we would like to characterize how peptide toxins interact with bacterial ion channels, introduce point mutations, and validate binding by in vitro binding assays as well as by computational protein docking and molecular dynamics calculations. The overall goal is to achieve a deeper understanding of the nature of toxin-ion channel interactions at the molecular level.

Qualification requirements
Applicants should have a minimum of an advanced level undergraduate degree (240hp/240ECTS) in Chemistry, Biochemistry or related subject.
Proficiency in written and spoken English.

Other assessment grounds that would place the candidate at an advantage include previous experience within following research topics:

• protein-protein docking calculations preferably with Rosetta software
• steered molecular dynamics simulations for unbinding pathway calculations
• protein expression in bacterial systems
• protein purification with IMAC and GF with FPLC
• purification of bacterial ion channels
• Biacore affinity measurements
• yeast display for protein-protein measurement

In addition, we value greatly good work ethic and ability to collaborate with members in the lab. The position may include assisting teachers with instructional responsibilities.

Terms of Employment
75% for 6 months. The employment is scheduled to start July, 2018.
