Welcome to Linnaeus University! A place for knowledge, ideas and development. For growth potential and a belief in the future. In Småland and in the world.

The Department of Chemistry and Biomedical sciences is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities within this multidisciplinary school include the areas of Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences and Organic Chemistry. The Bioactive Polymers Laboratory research group (BPL) in Kalmar seeks a research assistant for peptide chemistry.

The project
We are studying a novel family of bioactive peptides called alpha-nemertides, that we have discovered in the epidermal mucus of ribbon worms. Specifically, the work in the BPL involves peptide synthesis via Fmoc-based solid-phase peptide synthesis; preparative and semipreparative purification via HPLC, and LC-MS evaluation and assessment of purity. Peptide activities are assessed via brine shrimp survival tests. The work also involves general maintenance of the laboratory, and it may also involve supervision of BSc and MSc students. Part of the position (25%) is devoted to assisting in moving the laboratory to the new University campus.

Qualification requirements
Applicants should have a minimum of an advanced level undergraduate degree (240hp/240ECTS) in Biotechnology or related subject.
Proficiency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of the specific lab setup and organization is advantageous due to the forthcoming move.

Other assessment grounds that would place the candidate at an advantage include previous experience within following research topics:

• Solid-phase peptide synthesis
• Peptide purification via HPLC
• Peptide oxidation and folding
• LC-MS
• Freeze-drying
• Bioassays

Terms of Employment: 100% for 4 months. The employment is scheduled to start September 1, 2018.

Placement city: Kalmar
