Welcome to Linnaeus University! A place for knowledge, ideas and development. For growth potential and a belief in the future. In Småland and in the world.

The evolutionary ecology-/ and fish-biology/ research-group in Kalmar seeks a project assistant for a literature review and statistical analyses of population genetic structure.

Project title
Ecology and genetics of pike

The research project
The pike Esox lucius is a large, long-lived, iteroparous, top- predator fish species that occupies eutrophic and oligotrophic lakes, rivers and brackish waters. It is emerging as an important fish model organism in studies of ecology and evolution, and it can be exploited in future research for identifying causes and consequences of phenotypic and genetic variation at the levels of individuals, populations and species.

The aim of this project is to study ecological drivers and genetic signatures of evolutionary divergence and local adaptation in pike. The research will be conducted in collaboration with other scientists within the framework of an ongoing long-term study of pike in the Kalmar sound area of the Baltic Sea. Work includes reviewing previous research and using data from molecular genetics tools to analyse population genetic structure.

Qualification requirements
Applicants should have a minimum of an advanced level undergraduate degree (240hp/240ECTS) degree in biology.
Applicants should have a documented familiarity with research in evolutionary ecology of fishes, expert knowledge of biology of pike, and experience from laboratory work and statistical analysis of population genetic structure.

Other assessment grounds that would place the candidate at an advantage include experience a high proficiency in written and spoken English, ability to solve problems and the ability to work independently as well as interact well in a research group.
It is advantageous if candidates demonstrate experience in scientific publishing within evolutionary ecology research.

Terms of Employment
Full time for 4-6 months.
The employment is scheduled to start October 1 2017.
