Work description
The project assistant will be working with the WHO:s projections of global burden of disease attributed with climate change. The task is to create scenarios of the geographical coverage of falciparum malaria with climate change in year 2030 and 2050. To accomplish the task the assistant will be acquiring and maintain large amounts of globally gridded data from the WHO, as well as historic and future scenario gridded climate data, and model the climate forcing of the present malaria endemic regions using statistical techniques. The present climate forcing of the malaria endemic regions will be used for projections of the future global coverage of malaria endemic regions with based on climate change projections.
Institutional setting
The Division of Epidemiology and Public Health Sciences (a unit within Department of Public Health and Clinical Medicine) will host the PhD positions. The unit has recently been appointed Centre of Excellence for Global Health Research by the Swedish Council for Working Life and Social Research (FAS) with longterm funding supplemented by Umeå University. The Swedish Research Council (VR) also recently funded a new Swedish Graduate School in Global Health, hosted jointly by this Unit in Umeå and the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm. The successful applicant for the studentships in Global Health will work within this overall research and teaching environment.
Qualifications
The candidate must have a Masters degree in climate science or climate change and sustainability. The candidate should have a thorough training in climate modelling at master level and have developed skills in handling coded meteorological grid data. The candidate should be comfortable with handling large secondary data sets e.g. from the health sector at global scale. Experience in working with globally gridded health and climate data and projections of the impacts following with climate change are a merit. The candidate should be interested in global health issues and have a specific interest in climate change and malaria. Additional experience of work in health or/and biology is an asset. Fluency in English is an additional qualification. Working knowledge of French language is highly diserable.
