About Malmö University
Malmö University is one of Sweden's largest universities with approximately 25 000 students. Our university is characterized by a dynamic educational and research culture - multidisciplinary, problem-oriented and socially relevant. Malmö University is organized into five faculties: Faculty of Health and Society, Culture and Society, Education and Society, Faculty of Odontology and Technology and Society.

The faculty of Health and Society
The position is placed at the Faculty of Health and Society, Department of Biomedical Science. The education and research activities comprised by the faculty aim at contributing to the knowledge base in order to preserve, support and promote people's physical, psychological, and social health. Research is taking place in areas ranging from science, technology and medicine to social science. At the interfaces between them, exciting new areas for research are being generated. The research at the faculty is also linked to the research program Biofilms - Research Center for Biointerfaces which combines research with medical, dental, food and environmental applications, at three of our faculties, in close collaboration with regional industry.

Job description and responsibilities
The skin barrier effectively restricts both inward and outward diffusion of most molecules and thus upholds the water balance and protects us from harmful substances entering the body. At the same time, it offers an active interface that can be used as a platform to deliver therapeutics into the body and collect diagnostic signals.

Closely related to diagnostics of skin health and disease are enzymatic processes that protect against oxidative stress, which otherwise can lead to inflammation and mediation of chronic diseases. Thus, it is important to characterize enzymatic processes in the skin and under what conditions they proceed. In contrast to the biochemical reactions prevailing under homeostatic control inside the body, the skin organ represents a completely different system with a solid-like structure that is exposed to a continuously changing environment. The enzymes responsible for biological processes in the skin therefore have to be active in an environment that is very different as compared to the interior of the body. It has been shown that the activity of some enzymes of the skin barrier depends on its water content. However, knowledge of the precise conditions required for enzyme function in terms of hydration and physical state of the skin barrier molecular components surrounding the enzyme is largely lacking.

With this as background, the main focus of this project is to investigate:

• How enzyme activity of native skin enzymes is affected by skin hydration and relevant excipients or patch matrices.
• How extraction and permeability of relevant small molecular weight biomarkers from/through the skin barrier can be improved.

Apart from carrying out research as described above, the applicant is expected to take responsibility for the maintenance of the instruments involved and assist in teaching at undergraduate level, for example assisting with diploma works and summer projects. Therefore, documented excellent level of Swedish and English (understanding, speaking and writing) is favorable.

Required Qualifications and Criteria for Assessment of Applicants
Candidates are preferably chemists, biochemists or biophysical chemists by training and hold a MSc-degree. Special considerations will be given to candidates with research experience related to the skin barrier, such as transdermal drug delivery, and previous hands-on experience in some of the following methods: electrochemistry, permeability studies, HPLC-UV. The candidate should also have the ability to work in a team and collaborate with people in complementary disciplines. Previous experience from working in research projects, in industry or academia, is highly valued.

Form of employment and starting date
Temporary position for at least 6 months starting as soon as possible and no later than March 1st, 2019
