The Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts at the University of Gothenburg
hereby announces a permanent, full-time position as:
Professor of Music Education
Ref nr. PERM 2011/104
for the Academy of Music and Drama
Closing date: 1 August 2011
The Academy of Music and Drama is housed in the Artisten building in central Gothenburg and forms part of the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts at the University of Gothenburg. The institution runs educational programmes for composers, musicians of different genres, teachers of music and drama, musical theatre artists, opera singers and actors. It has well over 600 students. The Academy of Music and Drama also conducts development work, the training of researchers and research activities. It also has a wide range of activities that interact with the wider world. The institution has almost 200 employees.
Research within music education and aesthetic expression with an educational/pedagogical science orientation are two core areas of the Academy and the professorship assumes a central role in this respect.
The professor's main tasks are:
• to develop the subject and to monitor national and international research within the areas of music education, music didactics and arts education where there is an educational science connection. It also includes undertaking activities in music education research and researching on arts education at the interface of research within the artistic expression and performance areas.
• to teach
• to supervise doctoral students
• to examine MA projects.
The appointment foresees that the duties of the post comprehend 50 % own research activities. In addition, the position includes a mandate as subject representative, which can be limited in time, for the subjects of music education as well as research on arts education. The professor is the scholarly representative of the Academy within his or her subject area in the event of external contacts as well as on interaction with the wider community.
Qualification
To be qualified to apply you must have demonstrated both academic and pedagogic competence in accordance with Ch. 4, Section 3 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance.
To be qualified to apply for the professorship requires a doctoral degree within the field of music education or in alternative subjects such as research on arts education. A doctoral degree in musicology or musical performance is also a qualification for the post on condition that the research undertaken is clearly oriented towards questions relevant to music education and subject didactics in a specialised field. An associate professorship (research fellowship) is a requirement.
Grounds of assessment
Proven academic performance documented by way of publication in international (peer-review) journals, monographs or other types of academic publications are a requirement for this position. Pedagogic competence shall be documented. Besides teaching at research education level this competence shall also include experience of supervision of doctoral (post-graduate) students within the subject areas of music education, musicology and/or research on arts education. Furthermore, documented ability to develop and implement educational programmes, to undertake research of high quality and documented capacity as an academic leader are all required.
