Subject Area
Laboratory Animal Medicine includes Experimental Medicine using animal models for veterinary and biomedical research to increase biological and medical knowledge. The aim is to better understand and treat or prevent diseases in animals and humans. Experimental Animal Medicine also includes the knowledge of experimental animals and their use in research, their biology, care, handling, diseases, anaesthesia, pain relief, experimental techniques, genetics and ethical considerations in their use and the legislation that regulates it.

Duties
The candidate should, within the subject area

• develop and lead internationally successful research within Laboratory Animal Medicine
• further develop synergies between Laboratory Animal Medicine and the other disciplines of the Faculty
• develop and maintain national and international networks and collaborations with academia, organizations, and the industry
• actively participate in PhD training and supervising PhD students and residents.
• disseminate research findings and contribute with relevant knowledge to society
• apply for external research funding at national and international level
• develop research and education in cooperation with the other researchers and teachers of the Faculty and the University
• be responsible for and develop teaching at undergraduate and graduate level, as well as postgraduate courses in Laboratory Animal Medicine and Laboratory Animal Science
• actively participate in teaching and clinical work
• have Swedish as a working language within 4 years
• carry out administrative tasks/assignments within the department, faculty and university
• contribute to the strategic development of the department, faculty and SLU
• be responsible for staff and budget within the subject.

In addition to teaching in Laboratory Animal Medicine, teaching in related subjects at undergraduate level may also occur.

All work is carried out according to the 3Rs principle.

Qualifications
The successful applicant needs to

• have a degree in Veterinary Medicine, a doctorate and competence as Associate Professor (docent) or equivalent scientific competence within the scope of the subject description.
• have international Veterinary Medicine specialist competence (diplomate) or equivalent competence in a field relevant to the post
• be scientifically proficient in the subject of the post
• have documented experience as main supervisor at doctoral level
• have demonstrated a proven ability to lead and develop a successful research group
• have a proven ability to obtain external research funding in competition
• have documented clinical experience in working with any of/some of the animal species relevant to the faculty: cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry, horses, dogs and cats
• be pedagogically skilled and have the ability to integrate research and scientific approaches into both teaching and other pedagogical work
• be able to integrate pedagogical practice with the role as a researcher
• have a very good knowledge of English

Assessment criteria
The assessment criteria for appointment as a professor will primarily be based on the degree to which the candidate possesses the required qualifications specified for the position.

The assessment of research expertise will take the following into account:

• completed research activities and ongoing research
• scientific vision
• ability to independently initiate and pursue internationally recognized research
• ability to obtain external research funding in competition

The assessment of teaching expertise will take the following into account:

• planning, implementation, examination and evaluation of teaching and training, both nationally and internationally
• supervision and examination of doctoral students
• pedagogic vision and self reflection
• higher education teaching qualification or equivalent knowledge
• both theoretical and clinical work in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level

Furthermore, the assessment will consider the applicant's expertise in:

• developing and managing activities and staff within the academy
• collaborate with relevant stakeholders and society
• ability to disseminate research findings and development projects
• collaborate both nationally and internationally

When assessing the candidate's qualifications, equal attention will be given to teaching and research expertise respectively.

The position will be offered to the person who, after a qualitative overall assessment, is assessed to be most suitable to carry out and develop the above mentioned duties and to contribute to the positive development of the organization.
