Over the next few years Umeå University will promote research in the Educational Sciences in an extraordinary way. A new organisation Umeå School of Education, has been implemented and several research areas will be supported by an additional grant of, in total, € 14.000.000. The aim is to further develop educational science research in order to make Umeå University an increasingly prominent and competitive and center for excellence at the international level. A number of researchers will be recruited, including five professors and several post-docs and PhD students, in nine different areas within educational sciences.
One of these areas is Measurement and evaluation, where two professorships with different profiles are announced. Attached to each professorship are two PhD positions and two post-doc positions to be announced by the professor after appointment and an additional € 140.000 at the professor’s disposal.
SUBJECT AREA FOR THE POSITION
The area Measurement and Evaluation represents an inter-disciplinary field of research in social and behavioural sciences. At the core of the field are issues related to the quality of measurement and evaluation processes, from underlying theoretical models and intentions, to interpretation, use and consequences of outcomes. Research includes development, assessment and validation of theories, instruments and methods used for studying educational and societal systems as well as the individuals within these systems.
The current position is focused on educational measurement: large-scale measurement with aggregated data from different educational settings as well as small-scale measurement of the kind that can be conducted in the classroom. Since this latter kind of measurement can result in data at nominal and ordinal metric level, experience and theoretical understanding of these circumstances when analysing and interpreting obtained data will be considered important. Common for both types of measurement is the importance of measurement theory, sound measurement practice and measurement quality (validity) and documented expertise in these areas is therefore required. Experience from computer based testing and measurement in educational settings is also a merit.
WEIGHTING OF THE CRITERIA
Research skills is the most important criterion by which candidates will be assessed, followed by academic leadership skills and teaching skills. Research skills will be assessed on the basis of publication record, documented experience in developing research environments and ability to secure external financing.
University policy concerning gender equality will be a factor in the selection process.
