Embedded Systems (ES) is one of two research directions at the School of Innovation, Design and Engineering at Mälardalen University (MDH) in Västerås, Sweden. Embedded Systems is the most prominent research profile at MDH, and a national leader in embedded systems-related research. Within ES, the strategic research profile Embedded Sensor Systems for Health (ESS-H) is now being established and developed. ESS-H incorporates research from the ISS (Intelligent Sensor Systems) and the MRTC (Mälardalen Real-Time Research Centre) research areas at the school. Within ESS-H, systems-oriented research with industrial relevance is conducted in collaboration with industry and society. Industrial partners are the companies Addiva, Cambio Healtcare Systems, DELTA, Giraff Technologies, Hök Instrument, JC Development, Medfield Diagnostics, Motion Control, and Quality Pharma.

Research within ESS-H is organized into three core areas and two supporting technology areas. The three core areas are Biomedical Sensor Technology, Biomedical Signal Processing, and Intelligent Decision Support. The supporting technology areas are Software Testing and Dependable Wireless Communication. In conjunction with other resources within the University, we are now recruiting two professors to ESS-H that will have an important role in academic research, and in collaboration with industry and society.

The position

The position addresses the ESS-H core area Biomedical Signal Processing, with close relation to the area Biomedical Sensor Systems and to some extent also the area Dependable Wireless Communication. A particular focus will be on the detection and removal of unwanted artefacts, e.g. movement artefacts, from the measured signals. The design, implementation and evaluation of non-invasive sensor systems for measurement of physiological parameters is also of importance, as well as reliable wireless communication of the measured parameters. The professor will have an important role in the building of a large cross-subject research group with several professors and other senior researchers, with focus on systems-oriented research within the ESS-H research profile in collaboration with industry and society, and in building and maintaining a large regional, national and international network. Cooperational abilities and experience of collaboration with industry and society is therefore important. The university does not provide any permanent funding for the position. Rather, the professor is expected to attract external funding to finance the own research activities as well as any group research activities. The professor?s proven ability to attract external funding is therefore fundamental to the position. The professor?s teaching responsibilities will include teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Active involvement in the development of the ESS-H environment as well as the entire ES environment is expected.
