Professor in Freshwater Ecology with research interests in behavioral ecology, community ecology or ecosystem ecology of running waters
Karlstad University, with its state-of-the art aquarium facility, is expanding its research and education program in freshwater ecology. The Department of Biology has 30 employees and belongs to the Faculty of Social and Life Sciences. The Department of Biology offers courses up to the Master's level and has a doctoral program, with nine active graduate students.
Research in biology is primarily applied, emphasizing ecology and conservation in streams and rivers. Faculty members at the Department conduct research dealing with stream regulation, the effect of riparian zones on aquatic organisms, fish migration, fish physiology, ecology and genetics of freshwater mussels and hydrological restoration (www.kau.se/Biologi/forskning).
Most of the research at the Department falls within one of the faculty's prioritized strong research niches, referred to as the "Management and Ecology of River Resources", a research group with researchers primarily from biology but also from the social sciences (
http://nrrv.se) . Much of the research at Biology is done in cooperation with actors outside of the university, such as the County Administrative Boards, the Swedish Transport Administration, the Swedish Forest Agency Board, etc. We have also developed a close relationship with the University Colleges of Lillehammer and Evenstad as well as with the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research.
We are looking for a highly qualified professor in freshwater ecology with expertise in behavioral ecology, community ecology or ecosystem ecology in running waters, and who works in a research area that builds on and complements the aquatic research being conducted at the Department of Biology. At least 50% of the applicant's time is expected to be devoted towards research and postgraduate education. It is the Department of Biology's intention to provide a graduate student position for the new professor.
Duties
The duties of the professor include teaching and advising of students from basic to advanced levels within the Biology Program, Teacher Education Program and non-program courses.
The holder of this position is expected to build upon and complement the research being conducted at the Department of Biology, and advise future graduate students within their research area. We expect that you are willing to work together with external stakeholders and that you develop new, externally-financed research projects in freshwater ecology in close cooperation with researchers at the Department of Biology and within the Faculty's strong research niche, the "Management and Ecology of River Resources".
