Faculty of Forest Sciences
Southern Swedish Forest Research Center

The centre is the southernmost department within the faculty of forest sciences, SLU [www.slu.se/en/departments/southern-swedish-forest-research-centre/]. The department is multidisciplinary with research and teaching in silviculture, nature conservation and forest history, forest planning and forest policy, forest pathology, tropical forestry and seed science. This means great possibilities for cooperation between disciplines, which is significant for forest planning as a scientific subject area.

Subject area

The subject area for the professor is forest planning. Scientifically, forest planning constitutes a framework for integrating information and methods at different levels and from different fields in order to give support for decisions regarding the use and management of forests. The subject area profile includes decision processes in and decision support for the forestry of different forest owner categories, the non-industrial private forestry ("family forestry") in particular. It also addresses the forest policy dimension and the societal concerns regarding the utilisation of forests for different forest goods and services, i.e. timber as well as environmental goods and other ecosystem services. The analyses concern the small-scale estate level as well as the large-scale landscape level. Also, the analyses aspects of societal development and forest policy that are relevant for forest planning and include use of methods for weighing among (giving priorities to) different forest interests and for management of risk and uncertainty.

Work duties

Within the subject area forest planning, the professor shall:

• develop and lead successful research that is recognised nationally and internationally, to represent the research discipline within the department and faculty, as well as actively apply for external funding of research- and development projects,
• develop and lead pedagogic activities at the basic (including master) level and doctoral student level (including supervision),
• cooperate in science and teaching within the department and within the faculty, as well as with other universities in Sweden and abroad,
• cooperate with the practical forest sector and other forest interests, which includes e.g. communication and outreach of research and research results,
• exercise the academic leadership by leading research projects and research groups.

Basic qualifications

The duly qualified candidate is someone who can prove to have scientific as well as pedagogic skill. The candidate's scientific skill shall be within the subject area, and he or she shall have a PhD (or equivalent) and associate professor qualifications (or equivalent). The candidate's pedagogic skill shall include e.g. ability to combine the role as teacher and supervisor and the role as researcher.

Assessment criteria

Assessment criteria are the following.

The assessment of scientific skill will consider:

• quality and quantity of completed and ongoing research within the subject area,
• ability to independently initiate and conduct successful research,
• success in being granted external funding for research- and development projects,
• ability to cooperate with other forest planning scientists as well as with scientists in other fields, both nationally and internationally.

The assessment of pedagogic skill will consider:

• planning, accomplishment (including examination) and evaluation of teaching in relevant scientific disciplines,
• supervision of doctoral students,
• ability to integrate research and a scientific view in teaching.

The following will also be taken into consideration:

• ability to cooperate with the practical forest sector and other forest interests, including e.g. communication and outreach of research and research results,
• ability to exercise the academic leadership by leading research projects and research groups,
• ability to handle such administrative routines associated with employees etc. that are normally going on at universities

In the overall assessment of applicants, scientific skill will be considered as the most important and pedagogic skill as the second most important. Ability to cooperate as well as leadership skills will also be considered.
