Professor in clinical genetics combined with a position as specialist physician
Ref PAR 2020/1260
Apply
The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 53 500 students and 6 500 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
At the Institute of biomedicine we study the cells of the human body - what they are made up of, how they work, how their functions are governed by their genetic material and how they collaborate with each other and interact with their environment. With such knowledge at hand we map the molecular explanations to human diseases in order to develop both better diagnostic tools as well as therapies to treat disease. Clinical genetics has, during the last decades, expanded significantly and seen a strong positive development, much thanks to the extraordinary progress in basic knowledge, technical advancements and efficient bioinformatic processing of data within the field of molecular biology and genetics, but also much thanks to the increasing importance of clinical genetics within the health care systems both as to diagnostics as well as to molecular and cell based therapies. With this announcement we intend to recruit a professor who can further develop the strong traditions of clinical genetic research and diagnostics, teaching students at all levels and programs, and interactively communicate clinical genetics with the general society and specifically with the health care system.
Subject area
Clinical genetics
Subject area description
Clinical genetics is a medical speciality, that the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare has classified among "other specialities". The speciality includes both seeing patients and laboratory diagnostics. At the outpatient clinic, patients are examined and diagnosed for hereditary diseases and genetics counselling is offered to families with hereditary conditions. At the clinical genetic laboratories genetic analyses of hereditary diseases as well as of acquired (non-hereditary) genetic alterations of importance for the diagnosis and treatment of primarily leukemias and other tumor diseases, are performed. Research within the field of clinical genetics includes all these areas, i.e. studies of both hereditary and acquired genetic alterations.
Job assignments
We are looking for a professor who can develop international competitive research activities within the field of clinical genetics. The research profile should thus be focused on scientific issues with high clinical relevance within the field and preferentially directed towards the group of rare hereditary diseases. The responsibility covers both research and research (PhD) teaching, training and supervision. The successful candidate should also teach students at the basic and advanced levels within the physician (MD) program as well as in other programs offered at the Sahlgrenska academy. The professor is also expected to carry out other tasks that are normally associated with a professorship, e.g. administrative work, elected member of internal and external working groups and boards, and representing clinical genetics nationally and internationally. The tasks as specialist physician in clinical genetics will be designed according to the clinical needs as well as to the competence and experience of the successful candidate, but will focus on the demands for developing Clinical Genetics and Genomics (KGG) as a University Hospital Unit (USVE). It is of importance that the professor will contribute both to the development of the laboratory diagnostic part and to the outpatient clinic of Clinical Genetics and Genomics (KGG). The professor is additionally expected to play an active role within Genomic Medicine Sweden (GMS).
