The university offers unique, collective research expertise across the entire mining and minerals chain - from exploration, beneficiation/concentration, metal production and industrial operation and maintenance to remediation after mine closure. The research group is made up of leading researchers from traditional mining and minerals subject areas such as ore geology, geophysics, rock engineering, rock mechanics, soil mechanics, mineral processing, process metallurgy and applied geology, and researchers from disciplines including chemistry, industrial production environments, operations and maintenance management, fluid mechanics, and economics.
Description of Research subject
The research subject rock mechanics and rock engineering comprises the properties and behaviour of rock and rock masses; design and construction in rock; basic experimental and theoretical studies, development of models.as well as applications within the areas mineral extraction, building of infrastructure and energy.
The research area for the position is dynamic rock mechanics with focus on wave propagation and vibration in rock. Areas of application will be for example: mining-induced seismicity for mining at great depth, acoustic emission as a tool to evaluate failure mode and location during controlled laboratory tests, blasting-induced and train-induced vibrations.
Duties
The holder has to conduct research, research supervision, and teaching within relevant areas of the field. Particular emphasis is on research and applied science, so good relations with Swedish and International mining companies are important. In addition, some teaching for the educational programmes Civil Engineering and Master of Science in Mining and Geotechnical Engineering might be included.
Qualifications for Professor
To qualify for employment as a professor, one must demonstrate scholarly expertise as well as educational expertise. Educational expertise and scholarly expertise are given equal consideration. Applicants must be able to demonstrate that they are leaders within their discipline and be able to present original and innovative scholarly achievements of good international standard. This is typically documented as articles in recognised journals with international circulation.
Educational expertise comprises expertise in planning, implementing, and evaluating teaching. Professors must have undergone supervisory training and normally have been the principal supervisor for at least one doctoral student through to the student's graduation.
Basis for assessment
For the position, the following assessment criterias applies:
• Documented scientific proficiency (in Seismology, Geophysics, Rock Mechanics or similar) equivalent to three PhD theses* Documented pedagogical skills* Experience from qualified supervisingOther assessment criterias:

The applicant will have documented academic and pedagogical skills which will be valued equally. The applicant should have conducted independent research, normally for a period of at least three years after taking the doctor's title.
Applicants are to have documented their scientific skill through a total scientific corpus that embodies the equivalent of at least two doctoral theses (in Seismology, Geophysics, Rock Mechanics or similar) of normal standard. Applicants are to have been published in international scientific journals recognised in the subject field and/or monographs/books.
The applicant should have been assistant supervisor to at least one doctoral student. Completion of supervisor training or equivalent qualifications is a requirement. Exceptions can be made only if the applicant has other education and experience that is deemed equivalent.
